Question for you guys on BHop vs Calzaghe

Hopkins had to conserve energy. He knew that. If he let his hands go and failed, he would've put himself in a bad position where he might've been embarrassed late in the fight. Even with his very minimal work rate, he was still gased in the fight. Just think about that.

I think his plan was the right one. He did what he had to do. I just think that if he didn't gas late, his right hand counters would've been more harder and precise. If you look at him after he got his 4 minute rest, he looked energized and refreshed. Imagine THAT Hopkins over 12 rounds! Easy UD for Hopkins.

Bhop is retirement material. He can't even throw double digits in a round. It is rather pathetic how he tries to hide it.

 

Another factor is when Hopkins did try to press(when he had energy), he was not successful 90% of time, losing the inside exchange with Calzaghe, then he retreated back to the counter puncher/cheating role, as pressing against Calzaghe is an assured loss, while making Calzaghe come at you is bringing out his vulnerability.

Either way, he lost very wide, the KD was a flash KD, Calzaghe was not hurt and I believe that threw a lot of people off in scoring the fight.

9 rounds to 3 is not a close fight and Hopkins did indeed lose 90% of the close exchanges, despite the inside fighting generally being one of his signature things. He was rendered useless in the bout after Calzaghe nullified the right hand and then went about surviving, which he is possibly the best at in the sport even now.

Prime to prime, Calzaghe would have still nullified the right hand, Hopkins would have pressed more and you'd have had a very competitive, closer fight that ended controversially and likely would be best scored as a draw in a 12 rounder, my take.

At LHW Hopkins definitely had the power to take Calzaghe out. The problem was that Calzaghe rarely allowed him to hit him flush. Otherwise Calzaghe would most definitely have landed on his ass again, and might have stayed there.

Exact same score I had it. Clear win for Joe if you ask me. It's absurd when I read comments like "Joe arguably lost."

 

He might have had the power to finish him, but his experience told him that it was too early in the fight and Calzaghe's conditioning would help him recover very fast. Had he attempted to finish him and failed he would have been drained and dead by mid rounds(especially at his age were he is conservative with energy). If the KD would had happened in the 11th or 12th I could see Bhop trying to finish cal off. who knows maybe he could have.
