The Witherspoon-Tillis thread inspired this, with an announcer saying of Tillis, "That's why they call him "Quick." Here's a couple I've noticed while watching fights on YouTube the last couple of days. I'll bet there's thousands of examples. Here goes: Before the Michael Moorer - Alex Stewart fight, HBO's Jim Lampley noted that Stewart looked like he was adequately warmed up. He said that for the Tyson fight, Stewart was "bone dry." So I went back and watched the Tyson - Stewart blowout. The HBO broadcast showed Stewart warming up vigorously in his dressing room. When he was in the ring, he was glistening with sweat. Despite being knocked down very early, Stewart tried to slug with Tyson, only to be caught again and stopped. He was definitely not "bone dry." It seems like someone in the truck should correct an announcer if he mis-remembers like that. Before the first Riddick Bowe - Andrew Golota fight, it was pointed out that Bowe was wearing Grant gloves, while Golota was wearing Reyes. Okay, interesting. But then the team went on to talk about how they'd never seen that before. Lampley asked George Foreman if he'd ever seen it in all his years of boxing. George emphatically replied that he hadn't. But for the second Frazier fight, George wore G&S gloves while Frazier wore Everlast. I can see not remembering it, but to be so emphatic about it when it happened in ONE OF YOUR OWN SIGNIFICANT FIGHTS... Sigh... Of course there's celebrities who have no business to be calling fights. Which reminds me... Jake and Vicki were the color commentators for the tragic Collins-Resto fight, along with an announcer whose name escapes me. Tony Perez, who seemed to me to fall asleep at the wheel in several fights, was the referee. Watching the fight on YouTube recently, it was obvious that Resto's gloves were misshapen. Yet none of the officials or announcers caught what could be seen on video. Maybe I was looking for it, while during the bout officials and announcers weren't because it was such an unheard of occurrence. I don't know...
Lampley's finest/worst moment came during Pacquiao-Clottey: This content is protected There are too many George Foreman examples to list. My two favorites are probably: in Trinidad-DLH, when he claimed that Tito was tentative because he was scared of Oscar's broad shoulders; and in Lewis-Ruddock when he insisted that the bad first-round knockdown in which Ruddock was basically saved by the bell wouldn't affect him in the second round (Ruddock got knocked out seconds later). I can't remember the fight, but Lewis was commentating on an early Wlad fight and for about ten rounds would not shut up about how deadly Wlad's right hand was. Literally gushing over it non stop for about half an hour. The next round, Wlad KOed the opponent with a brutal left hook, and Lewis tries to play it off cool, failing miserably, by saying "see guys, there's that left hook I was telling you about".
To me, Jim Lampley is an amazing guy because I can't understand how he could call fights for 30 years and learn absolutely nothing.
The most recent, obvious example of Tessatore after Ruiz got KD',d by Joshua, telling the audience to watch this finisher do his thing.... Whoops.
For me, almost anytime Lampley opened his mouth. It frequently seemed he was commentating on a different fight than the one he and I were watching.
I don't think I'll get over Sergio Mora shouting at the top of his lungs "and he lands a vicious, straight right uppercut!!!!" any time soon.
I didn't like when, I am not sure, but I think it was sal marciano used to say goodnight sweet prince when a boxer got knocked out. I mean, to yell out good night sweet prince when a guy falls done unconcious after being hit so hard, not a good thing
George Foreman: “Tonight the referee is the most important man in the ring other than the fighters” “Roy is playing the feinting game and Griffin is benefiting by it” (right at this moment, Roy feints and knocks out Montell with a left hook) “Look at Roy and Lucas, they’re totally different guys....sometimes sweat falls pitifully, sometimes it just falls”
