Hi, ive got an okay setup at home although not the best. Treadmill, heavy bag and speedbag. I want to have my first amateur fight but since gyms are closed i cant get a trainer. Do you think i could prepare well enough without the help of a trainer for my first amateur fight, and then get a trainer once gyms open. I'm pretty new but I have the basics of footwork, turning body into punches and always having my guard up drilled into me at this point. would appreciate opinions
Just do what your doing if you enjoy it wont be doing any harm (apart from developing possible bad habits!), but once its all over get down an amateur gym and take it from there, no substitute for it really
I'd swerve it until you've got plenty of sparring under your belt. Until I sparred a lot I didn't realise how unprepared I had been, a trainer isn't essential but sparring experience definetely is.
W Who do they let come on these sites !!! Firstly how can you have an amateur bout without being aligned to a club..... how can you have a bout when no shows going on.... What do you think you just take your kit bag to a local amateur show in your area and say have a go... you won’t have no medical or anyone matching you!! Just checking this isn’t a April fools joke in January
Commendable that you want to do this. Just know what you are getting in to. I'm 37 now. Boxed as a competent but not great amateur for 4 years until I was 35. You absolutely need sparring before you fight. Amateur rounds are 2 minute 3 rounds. They say you should be able to spar 6 rounds to be conditioned for the increased tempo of a real fight. Sparring experience is EVERYTHING for your first bout. You need to be going against several different guys in sparring. I'd say minimum you need 6 months of 2x a week sparring. At first it needs to be against an experienced boxer with control that wont damage you. I loved boxing, but I now have permanent injury from it... -deviated septum -broken rib -perforated eardrum -some slight hearing loss (permanent) You need to be in exceptional condition and at a minimum: Jump rope 30 minutes straight without getting too tired Punch a heavy bag 15 minutes straight without getting too tired. Run 3 miles daily without getting too tired (mile per round) Get some sparring in with someone controlled and has experience. Best of luck man.
I boxed for 13 years, and would say anyone that tries getting in the ring without a club is a fool. Firstly, it isn't even possible as someone earlier mentioned - you need to be aligned to a club to participate, as well as have an active medical, pay annual fees etc. Secondly, how you can expect to be any good at boxing without a trainer is bizarre. I first went into the gym when I was 11 and I wasn't allowed to compete for almost a year as they prepped me. I still got absolutely battered in my first bout too.
Lols not sure if serious but I'd say get some street sense in first as a natural fighter holds alot over a trained taught sporting boxer, terrible advice I know, true though
Sorry guys I probably should of reread what I wrote as I certainly didn't explain what I meant correctly. With all this equipment could i prepare in terms of conditioning myself, increasing punch power, and maybe improve my form through videoing etc. To the point that once i go to a gym it will perhaps only take 3 months of sparring and coaching before im ready for an amateur bout. More broadly the question is can I make significant progress in quarantine from self critique and simply doing footwork trills, cardio and heavy bag work to prepare for an amateur bout. Sorry for being unclear/not even saying what i meant.
Tbf, In some places they just let you sign up because they need the entertainment. Very common in Mexico
Get a trainer. Novice bouts are pot luck, you could get someone useless or someone who’s a naturally talented fighter or who has been sparring for 2 years prior. You also need a trainer to make sure you’re properly matched and not stitched up. It’s not pro boxing but you can still get hurt and knocked out in the amateurs.
