He just wouldn’t mate. He’s too small and it’s an old age style he has. Boxers have improved technically and heavyweights are too big today. Him vs the light heavyweights would be fairer matchups.

 

Old age style lol. Nobody has been able to replicate Dempseys style. Dempsey was a killer of men especially big men. Look at the average size of his sparring partners.

 

It would look the same. They weren’t great technical boxers back then they were very tough men who brawled and battered lumps out of one another to please the crowd. Modern day fighters are smarter boxers and also fitter. Probably not as tough but they are better, the sport has improved and athletes have gotten better just like any sport in the world.

 

No, no no. Stick to what you said. You said specifically that "It's biology" then listed off the size difference as why he would lose.

All of a suddenly biology doesn't matter when it doesn't suit you anymore? Perfectly fine to think Dempsey doesn't beat those guys but lets try to be consistent in our reasoning here.

 

Biology and skills. I wouldn’t back some 6”4 250 lb man down my local pub with a few karate lessons to beat them of course but size and skill are too much. I didn’t think I needed to explain that to you. Remember I said they wouldn’t beat any “good” big man. I’d of course back then to beat Dave Allen lol.

 

Before we answer any of that we have to agree that modern filming wouldn't make these guys more likely to look worse. That's just completely unfounded and unlikely imo. There's no logic to thinking that a better camera leads to worse quality of boxing. Just like nobody looks better with a 144p camera than they do on 1080p.

I never said it would make EVERYONE look better. I said it would more than likely make guys look better who we have bad footage of. Fights like Jeffries vs Sharkey or Burns vs Johnson where the footage is crappy. Even the fight you mentioned might look even a little better.

This is the problem with the more vocal members of this forum. You're either of the opinion that the old time fighters solidly couldn't compete and are unimpressive on film or you think they would all be the best today and if you aren't 100% right either way then it's some blow to your ego. Just chill out. The answer is somewhere in the middle. My point is you can't help but have a much easier time viewing whats going on and observing every punch like it actually happened with filming like today. You simply don't have the inconvenience of watching crap footage. If you want me to say you're going to see loads and loads of punches that weren't there, impeccable defense and slipping of punches the likes of which are before unseen then I'm sorry but you've come to the wrong place. All we'll get is a better impression of the fighters from before and it might not be some major shift in rating but just a different impression. It doesn't always have to be about one of us being right and the other being a fool who DKSAB.

At the end of the day we have to keep our minds open to persuasion. Doesn't mean I've changed your mind but our minds have to be honestly open or else we're just ignorant.

 

Why do we have to always bring it down to some bar fight between random drunks? How come we can't use boxing examples? Surely there's examples of great 185 lbrs getting wrecked by 6 foot 5 heavyweights that weigh 245 lbs.

Edit: Messed up and said 6 foot fighters. Mean't 6'5 heavyweights that weigh 245 lbs.

 

Many of modern heavies don't know how to even slip a jab they just plod forward with their gloves up covering their face.

 

You're right, of course - better quality film doesn't create worse quality of boxing!

My initial post on this subject was simply a rebuttal to the tired old story, about how old-timers who look like crap in old movies, would look much better in top quality footage. I believe they would look the same!

Also, no agenda or "ego" is involved, when I watch old fights. I couldn't care less, if the old-timers were better or worse or on the same level as today's fighters. It gives me no special pleasure to say, that to me Ketchel (for example) looks pretty bad... but that's just the way I see it.
