Let's talk about fights where the outcome of the fight would've been different had the rule been in place. One example being if it was mandatory Archie Moore would've lost his title via first round KO! It robs fighters of overcoming the odds! It takes away the heat of the moment the excitement... a few slips after a good shot hurt or not and there goes the biggest opportunity of there life!
Marquez-Pacquiao I, Round 1. The 3KDR would have robbed us not just of a great fight, but quite possibly a great series of fights. Is it still implemented? I could probably recall instances of refs waving fights off after three KD's in recent years, but I would have assumed that it was on the official's own discretion and not on account of a rule. If it's still a thing, it shouldn't be.
It would be nice to see the 15 round title bouts return, there have been some tragedies with 12 rounders, the outcomes of past matches may have different. Same thing with the 3 knockdown rule, every state is different, but it should be universal.
Wasn't there a study a few years ago that ring deaths have not been reduced per fight since the 12 round rules have gone to effect? I think the rules change was a premature, knee-jerk reaction to the Mancini v. Kim fight.
The safety of fighters must come first, even if it is sometimes to the detriment of the sport. I love the old time battles, but I don't want them back!
I like the rule. Fighters are aware of it. If you go down three times in a round, things could get dangerous.
I like it, but just keep it for title fights. And all organizations have to agree on it. That will be amazing in itself.
We may have already named all the fights in modern boxing history where a boxer got knocked down three times in one round and CAME BACK TO TIE or WIN. By the same token, Joe Frazier got knocked down three times in the first, three times in the second against Foreman in Jamaica ... it wasn't getting any better at that point. Doesn't seem like a problem worth worrying about. People who go down three times in a round tend to be on the way to losing. Like Saintpat said, don't get knocked down three times in a round. Problem solved. (LOL)
In their first fight, Romeo Anaya dropped Arnold Taylor 3 times in the 8th and once in the 10th before Taylor landed a one-punch KO in the 14th.
should really be the refs discretion based on the condition of the fighter more often than not a 3 KD round is usually the end
The trouble is, or at least was, the referees had too much discretion. They used to show immense courage on behalf of the losing fighter. Inspired by the Freddie Stele thread I just watched his fight vs Vince Dundee. Triple fracture of the jaw! You can't legislate for that kind of foolhardy courage and it is an awesome sight for the modern viewer as Vince went down time and again. But I wish the rule had been in place for that fight and saved Vince from himself, in the absence of either a referee or a corner who could spot a massacre when they saw one. However, a caveat to counter that might be that a ref waits for a third knockdown to stop a fight and the fighter doesn't go down. Nobody wants to see that either, a fighter defenceless and the ref thinking, maybe subconsciously, that he shouldn't stop the fight without that third knockdown. There are arguments for and against. I think the fairest thing to say is that it's not a perfect rule but at least it's well-meaning.
Fair assessment. I believe in most cases a 3 knockdown round is usually a sign it's over and most refs have it as a measuring stick regardless of if the rule is in effect I just dont want it codified where it can rob us of a great comeback. I think refs need to sensibly observe the action and officiate accordingly. The same practice applies in tkos. Did he stop it too soon or let it go too long? I guess a rule is supposed to take the human aspect out but I dont like it
