Sanchez vs Gomez: care to comment on these opinions?

I think Gomez could have won the rematch.
I think he could have lost, too.
I would have liked to see Gomez win the rematch.
What I like, seldom happens.
But sometimes it does.

I don't think Gomez took Sanchez lightly, but I don't think he prepared as he should have. But I am only saying that because that is what was said about him in a documentary I watched. I think a rematch would have had them both in the ring at their best, come what may. Too bad it never happened. The same documentary had Gomez saying he cried when Sanchez died, because he knew there could never be a rematch. I believe that was a true sentiment.

 

And I know he is the consensus GOAT at 122. But 122 is a much traditionally weaker division than featherweight. Did he really achieve more than Sal? Well his resume is weaker than Sal's.

 

It was the same one. I have watched it several times. I speak Spanish so didn't need a translation. Great Documentary. Great boxer. Great man!!!!!

 

He said he got hit in the throat several times during the Lupe Pintor fight. Made it sound like it was done on purpose, or at least used it as evidence of how savage the battle was for him. Claims that to be the cause of why his speech is raspy.

He lived pretty hard too, then the drugs, really took a toll on him at the end of his career and more-so after retirement. He isn't a young man anymore and has put on weight. He didn't mention a specific ailment, but those things mentioned in the doc are contributing factors.

His wife is a rare woman. More precious than rubies. She stuck with him through all the trouble when most women would have left him. Touching to see them together in church and interacting together. Like I said, great documentary.

Styles make fights and Sanchez was bigger and had an iron chin and endless stamina. Gomez was never going to beat him because he had to attack and Sanchez would be able to counter him and the times Gomez would get through I don’t think he could do so enough to take Sanchez into any seriously rough moments.

Their careers are close in accomplishments. Sanchez is overall slightly greater because he has the dominant head to head win, plus their results against Nelson. Gomez has the extra divisions and Zarate win so it gets closer and his talent was rare.

Gomez was ill-prepared for Sanchez. It’s a combination of underestimating him and living the high life. He took off on a honeymoon cruise and came back to camp like three weeks out and overweight. Having said that, Zarate was sick as a dog when he was facing Gomez and wanted to postpone but the contract stipulated he’d get fined more than his pay. So Gomez got a win that’s probably more dominant than it would have been and a loss that’s probably more thorough than it would have been had he prepared better.

 

Wilfredo Gomez and Salvador Sanchez were my favorites among the smaller fighters back then, also the great Alexis Arguello. Sanchez was a unique fighter to come along, a clean fighter with great counterpunching skills and movement, who also had an iron chin as well as unending stamina. He defeated a very great champion to win the WBC title, Danny Little Red Lopez on Feb 2 1980, TKO 13. His title challengers carried more merit, Lopez, Patrick Ford, Juan La Porte, Pat Cowdell, Azumah Nelson, Roberto Castanon, and yes, the great Wilfredo Gomez. He was headed to a potential showdown with another great champion, Alexis Arguello, at the time of his untimely death. Gomez also defeated another great champion in Carlos Zarate, who was climbing a next weight class in an attempt to conquer Wilfredo in 1978.
