My best mate likes boxing so that's good - I got him watching some classic fights. I remember he and I were on a stag do in Tenerife and it was... well, it was a stag do in Tenerife so you can imagine how it was. We went into this bar and they happened to have the Moore-Durelle fight on. Me and him just sat down and watched the whole thing and he loved it.
I've met a few. I worked at a restuarant and would demand at least one TV show fights if they were on. Every now and again you hear some cheers or boo or whatever, I'd come out and somebody would be getting off the canvas on TV. I noted the regulars who cheered. Probably 3-4 customers who actually knew a bit and a couple coworkers. One was a sparring partner for Ray Olivera when he was on FNF all the time. Almost all of these people had done time for whatever that is worth.
Rumour has it, this is a recreation of the dinner scene from when mcvey and mendoza met up This content is protected ... its only a rumour though
Only 2 mates really who're also into classic boxing, a few who are into contemporary. MMA is both of their go to sports though, boxing fans seem to be a dying breed really and I find it more, without sounding too condescending, annoying than anything to speak to a lot of casuals say at work or something. They'll say any old shite just so they have a reason to speak.
I once had a girlfriend in highschool (shock, I know) who really tried to talk to me about my interests - bless her - and that resulted into one of my favourite memories of all-time. I was sitting in a French lesson talking to one of my mates about who'd win if Wilder was to grow a pair and fight Joshua. We were talking about it for a good ten minutes, and she perked up with a ****ing golden comment: "Y'know what I think? I think Joshua should man up and fight Ronaldo." The stunned silence she received was deafening. The only way I could not make her feel stupid was by just agreeing, moving on and conceding that Ronaldo could definitely win.
I have a lot of boxing fans in my circle of friends, and a few fighters, but no true classic boxing fans.
When my wife wants to get to sleep she says 'talk to me about what boxing you've been watching'. She's out in about 20 seconds.
It was really really hard to not make her feel stupid. Being an arrogany sarcastic ***** is who I am, and that really was a golden opportunity.
I have a close friend which I knew 30 years ago who I still email. but we talk about friend things more. He will sometimes mention Pacman or a fight, but we don't talk too much about it. I am rather quiet about my boxing stuff. My family is not into boxing. My Dad was into baseball the most and not much else. My brother in law knows only the big news on boxing, and he is into football and things like that. So really I don't know many people who really know boxing. A lot of people think they are boxing experts, but they are only big news followers. They know about Ali or Frazier or Leonard Duran or Leonard Hearns, but not lesser known fighters like say Buster Drayton from the 1980's. I used to read the magazines when I was younger and that was my education on it and watching it.. I never talked to anyone about it who really knew it back then. Today with these message boards there are other people who talk about it. So it is ok. It works out fine but there are people who take opinions about boxing and go personal. Which is always how things go on the internet. But generally it is fun to put out opinions and see how other's who know about it feel.
It's amazingly rare to meet anyone in the general rank and file that knows anything about boxing other than Tyson. Every once in a while you might hear someone try to impress by dropping a name such as "Pacquiao," usually accompanied by a knowing nod, to prove to someone they're a rank above in the ways of boxing knowledge. Met maybe three from ESB in real life, but no one from Classic.
