His best chance probably would have been to try for a unification with Chris Byrd. If he managed to win that then cherry pick some pay days with aged versions of Tyson and Holyfield. Beyond that I think his options would have run out.. the heavyweight division of the early to mid 2000’s was getting too big and powerful for Roy and at 35 he was slowing down.

If Jones had stayed at heavyweight, I think he would have cherry picked his opponents. Guys like Tyson and Holyfield who were fighting on legacy alone would be fresh pickings and an easy payday for Roy Jones.

Jones would loose to just about anyone else though. Yeah he had speed, but the heavyweight division had the height, reach and power to the negate that

Corrie Sanders fresh off the Wlad win, tried very hard to secure a unification with Jones.

Jones didn't want any of that. I believe Byrd tried to get him in the ring as well.

A Corrie Sanders fight would have been absolutely awful for Roy. It’s one of the worst fights that Roy could have taken. I’m so glad that it didn’t happen.

We have to remember that Sanders went to war with a version of Vitali Klitschko who was looking to avenge the defeat of Wlad.

He wouldn’t have respected Roy’s speed or power. He’d have gone straight at Roy.

A southpaw HW who had fast hands, great power and a lot of aggression, is the last thing in the world that Roy would have needed.

Roy didn’t see him as an easy opponent like Ruiz. From memory, the fight didn’t get blocked just because of the belt situation. I think that Roy realised just how dangerous the fight would be. Because I know that after briefly considering it, he then went back and demanded a much bigger purse.

Regarding Hopkins and Toney, I never believed for a second that Hopkins was serious about that match up back then. I think he just liked to run his mouth.

He should have stayed at Heavyweight where the remainder of his career would have been treated very differently. After beating Ruiz, he was basically playing with house money; any loss won't hurt his legacy and any win will only enhance it.

He did have an option of facing Chris Byrd who held the IBF Title at the time and that would have been a winnable fight.

The problem with a Byrd fight was that, unlike Ruiz, it was also a loseable fight, therefore Roy wouldn’t have taken it.

He dies of skull implosion coupled with glass damage to his brain from where his jaw shattered.

    Roy chose life.

Mentally ill delusional fanboy Loudunce lying about Roid Jones as always.

    A fat 40 year-old NPD-impaired fanboy that is.

    TRAGIC.

    As I've spelled out before, it's common knowledge why Roid publically backed out of the Corrie Sanders fight; it was a "done deal" in Aug '03, bar the one single detail of Roid signing the dotted line. However, within two days Roid changed his mind, citing the WBO's threat to strip Sanders if he took the fight as the reason the bout was off. It sure as hell wasn't Sanders who backed out;

"I know". LOL. You "know" nothing you useless clown.

...Roid embarrassingly tried to defend the WBA strap against Evan Fields, claiming Fields was still a "top 3 heavyweight". He then scurried back down to 175lbs rather than get KTFO by his highest ranked WBA contender at heavyweight, David Tua. Or so he thought.

    End of discussion.

    Oh Joseph.

    I wondered where you’d been.

This post will bring enormous delight to my brother and my mate.

They’ve not seen your glorious posts in ages.

They’ve not asked about you for a long time now.

They’ll be so happy when I tell them that you’re back.

They are a little bit disappointed with you though.

    1. You haven’t had a proper meltdown for months.

    2. Since you discovered my real name, you no longer refer to me as ‘Fat Robert’

Never mind though. At least you’re here.

Anyway, let’s look at your post.

First of all, how old am I?

According to you, I’ve been fat and 40 for about 3-4 years now. Ha!

I’m not quite there yet. But when I do get there, I really hope that I can freeze time for a while like you have done.

Regarding the rest of your wonderful post, I think you’ll find that I’ve criticised Roy myself. It’s just that you hate me that much, you seem to have missed it. Never mind. It’s just so good to have you back. I’m not going to lie though. I am a little disappointed that it’s only a very minor rant this time. But I guess that something is better than nothing.

Regarding the Sanders fight, it seems that you haven’t mentioned anything about Roy’s pay demands. So I think that it’s only fitting that I now end my post with your OWN quote on the subject from just a few years ago:
    You take care now.

assuming he managed his money correctly (I don't think he did) Roy should have retired after the Ruiz fight. He went on to be a shadow of himself

I wonder how a HW fight of Rocky Marciano vs Roy Jones would play out. Sure, Rocky could KO him, but could he catch him?

Fair enough, but a belt was on the line; Roy Jones could have held both the WBA and the IBF Heavyweight belts giving him maximum leverage in cherry picking money fights.

It was a risk he should have taken, and if he lost it, again it wouldn't be held against him. And if he won his legacy would only be further enhanced.

Rocky Marciano has incredible punching power and was very, very relentless. Roy may be an elusive target, and yes his hand speed was blazing fast and in his prime he was very special, but Rocky doesn't need to even catch him clean. And with Rocky being the bigger man, the reality here is that the margin for error on Roy's part is razor thin.

    I can't even envision a Jones win.

My Pick: Marciano KO5 (with a highlight reel to boot)

I think a Sanders fight would have been even more dangerous than a Tua one.
