Anyone seen the Bruno vs. Tyson documentary on Sky? It's been heavily advertised, so I was anticipating it and thoroughly enjoyed it! Bruno showed some tremendous heart in the fight. Although he gets a lot of stick, the documentary reminded me of how good he actually was.
Of course it's going to remind you of how good he was. It's a British publication and all material published on Tyson, anywhere in the world, is designed to rate him as the greatest thing since sliced bread, so the (probably) overrating of Bruno is very much in their interests. After all, beating Bruno is in Tyson's top 3 wins.
Bruno doesn't get the credit he deserves he was a much better fighter than many would have you believe.
Agreed. He may have been limited in both natural movement/boxing fluidity and gas tank but his dedication and determination got him a world title strap in the end. Albeit if it maybe considered hook or by crook. Plus he never tried to avoid anyone. Outside of the ring he was a genuine and sincere bloke too. I always liked that about him then and now. I'll try and watch the documentary this evening if it's available.
I watched it last night, it’s very good! I remember watching the first fight they had at the time , I was only 7. The whole family cheering Frank on. I’d forgotten how big the gap was between the rematch. Nice to see them rekindle at the end
Really? I loved the Bomber, but he had his limitations. Journeyman Jumbo Cummings beats him in a round, anywhere outside the UK. He took one hell of beating (showing a solid chin, that many do not realise he had) against Bonecrusher, but ultimately blew a massive lead as the nervous tension got to him. Again another good effort against Terrible Tim, but he could not fight at the level to get the win. He did show heart against Tyson, the first time round, recovering from the shocking start, which again was probably more nervous tension than actually being seriously hurt. As much as people hype it, I was there for the Lewis fight. Everyone was a Bruno fan, but despite the solid start, no one was getting carried away about an upset. And I remember after McCall, when there were articles about if title holders Bruno, Seldon and Botha were the worse Heavyweight boxing had seen.
Really enjoyed it, though they made Bruno out to be better than he was. Right at the start Bruno said something like “if it wasn’t for Mike Tyson the world was his” he’d already lost before Tyson
I've said it for a long time, Bruno was and still is underrated.. he isn't the same level as Lewis, Tyson or Holyfield and nobody is saying he is. He would be a problem if he was around today, I'm not suggesting for a minute he rules this era or beats the likes of Fury but he would have been a tough night for EVERYBODY. He only lost to world champions or future world champions, Bruno could really punch, obviously he wasnt Wilder level of power but not many are but Bruno could really bang, had a great jab and his straight right hand was a problem. My own personal criticism of Bruno is he never went the traditional route, I would have liked to see Bruno win the British outright and pick up the commonwealth title so he had the full set. But European Champion and WBC World champion isn't bad career.
I think I'll give it a watch at some point. As mentioned already, the quote about ruling the World if it wasn't for Tyson, that was on the trailer and immediately got me thinking that it's just going to be like one of those documentaries where they show a clip of Gazza scoring against Scotland with ex teammates, all British, chiming in saying that he was the best in the World.
I really enjoyed this, can't recommend it enough. Obviously, people will already know a lot of the history in the documentary but it's a good reminisce. It's also quite a nice ending when they both sit down and chat.
A very enjoyable 90 minutes Made Bruno out to be better than he was but so what He was a lot better than the American Media give him credit for And did you see the bombs he took from Tyson? Anyone questioning that chin needs to give their head a wobble
