What do you think here? Cooney, who's just smashed Norton in to dreamland.. Facing Golota, who's almost beaten Big Daddy for the first time.?? 12 rounds of boxing. 3 kd rule applies.
Excellent fight. Both men had the size, power and jab to compete with the other. Neither was terribly durable but Andrew was a little tougher than Cooney. Both were penalized for low blows in their careers. I guess it depends on who catches the other in a major flurry first
Cheers my good man! It is a bit of a toughie tho to pick I'll admit. Both had moments of glory in defeat. If we pick the best version on my eyes of Cooney, it'd be Norton. Is there a chance Golota gets a panic attack before the fight and gets ripped to pieces by Cooney? I can honestly say it's a big possibility.
Yes I agree it’s possible that a flurrying Cooney could force Golata into a quit situation. Would I bet money on it either way? Probably not. I think it’s any man’s fight
Two decent fighters who were their own worst enemies. Probably be an entertaining scrap until one is KOd, DQd, or quits. I feel like Golota is better overall but unpredictable. If Cooney bum rushes him he could catch Golota cold and KO him. The longer the fight goes on you would think it would favor Golota but with his history you never know if hes going to quit or foul himself out of the fight if it starts getting really rough.
I am really surprised that Gentleman Gerry Cooney would be fighting a talented young fighter with size. I am used to seeing him fight the geriatric crowd that he knows that he can beat, Jimmy Young and Ken Norton. Maybe they should have thrown him in with a retired since 1972, Floyd Patterson. I think that Andrew Galota is a very tall heavyweight with enough power to take care of a Gerry Cooney. He is more balanced, and once he connects, game over against many of his opponents, though at times his boxing is far from clean when frustration sets in. Andrew on points. This could turn into Battle Of The Fouls.
IMHO, Cooney would get the win here, but I'm by no means willing to put money down on it! As others have said, there's the chance one of them could just quit while ahead on the cards. Assuming neither does, I'd go with Cooney by split decision win.
I never understood what went on in Golota's corner, especially during the second Bowe fight. You have a guy that is excitable and as volatile as TV nitroglycerin and, when he comes back to the corner, two guys are screaming at him. Bloodworth in one ear, Duva in his face, both about to hyperventilate. The fighter feels that. And I think that Cooney, pre Holmes, has a very good chance of winning.
Yeah, you're right. I just feel Golota got bombed out early so often, or even bowed out (Bowe reference) a few times later in fights, that Cooney would beat him either way. Do you feel Cooney plays it safe or goes for the gusto?
I’ve never really known Cooney to play it safe although he seemed a bit more reserved in the Holmes match. Trying to out jab Golata might be a mistake
I keep going back and forth on this one. Golota on paper is better but is rather immature mentally. Cooney has the power to bomb out Golota, but he too had mental roadblocks. I think the best scenario is an action packed fight, both men are dropped, both lose points to fouls, then around round 6 they have a conversation about their mental issues in the clinch, feeling a sense of kindred spirit, both men have a good cry in the middle of the ring, hug it out, raise each other's hands and leave the fight, growing more mature as better people. Of course the referee, atheltic commisions, and corners are dumbfounded and the fans start a riot that goes well into the night.
This is one fight I am confident Cooney wouldn't blow. Golota would mentally implode after Cooney hooks him in the liver area or head.
