March 8, 1971 (50 year Anniversary) of Smokin’ Joe Frazier vs Muhammad Ali I otherwise known as the Fight of the Century!

Welcome to installment 3 of the renewed FOTW series. This is the 50th Anniversary of The FOTC between Frazier and Ali (forgive me for being a Philly boy and always placing Smokin’ Joes name first!).

I imagine most if not all of us in classic have seen this multiple times, but if not there is no better week than this to watch it. Looking forward to getting some new scorecards as well as hearing stories from when you watched this first...especially interested in those who are 60ish + who can share some memories of watching it live.

so in honor of Frazier and Ali and perhaps the greatest fight in boxing history 50 years ago enjoy watching, scoring and reliving the fight one more time!

The Fight Of The Century was one of the greatest matches in the history of boxing. It was shown on national television in Jan 1975 on ABC's Wide World Of Sports as ABC was showing the re telecast of the 1974 Ali vs Foreman bout. The Ali vs Frazier fight was fitting as Ali had never lost his title in the ring up to that point.

 

I caught an ABC re broadcast of the fight today at work, Andre Ward was breaking down the action during commercial breaks

 

The FOTC actually exceeded expectations

Smokin Joe Frazier earned arguably the greatest win in boxing that night

What makes this night extra special is tonight being Monday night. Just like the fight. I think I will walk around the outside of MSG today and look for something commemorating this day. I had Joe winning 11-4.

 

Did you stumble across anything significant?

 

As I said in my other post, their is not a man who ever lived, not Foreman, Liston, Tyson, Louis, Lewis, etc who would've had an easy night win or lose, with either of these 2 men as they fought this night,

@PhillyPhan69 and anyone else interested. ESPN has remastered this fight, like color correction and enhancement, and graininess removal.

 

That sounds good, it did have some graininess.

 

Never made it. Worked through lunch.
