Strange as it may sound, forums like this one do play their part in boxing history. It's easy to view fights throughout the decades, but there aren't a lot of recorded opinions on which fighter was a live dog prior to the fight, which fight felt like a true 50/50, which fighter most people thought won which round, etc. The broadcasting networks are usually shilling one way or another, so what real record of the mood of the times do we have? A live, text based, round by round is actually a pretty good record of sentiment from a historical perspective.

Imagine if we didn't have records of fight odds? People talk of Calzaghe-Lacy as if Joe was a 10-1 underdog, when in reality the odds were virtually even.

It also adds a big fight feel.

 

The long name in RBR is essential because it puts the ego of the boxer on the line, the more names added the more the risk of a Narcissistic injury increases...so everything is on the line.

Also it's very useful when it is a Jose Martinez or Ike Ibeabuchi, you really need to know which Jose Martinez or Ike Ibeabuchi we are referring to

 

Just more elitist nonsense

 

An Elitist proper move will be to ban peasants from using names. A bio-scan tells us the serial number, that is all the peasant needs, names are not essential.

The long name-ban will be difficult, peasants will resist, but it starts by dropping the name requirements in official process, this makes a name trivial as a nick name. Then some bans can be auto-banned starting in advanced-China Biblical names, then names associated with any criminals, until all names become banned except the few names approved (Citizen, Peasant, Modest, Zhong, Humble, Innocent...etc)


With the banning of names, the Elites can have the comfort of taking the last things peasants had. And peasants can live happily ever after.

Anti-Social Mother's who are caught transmitting a neuronic sequence resembling a name are instantly investigated, recordings will show if its a name, forwarded instantly to the automated court, if the Plugged in Jury confirm the crime, she gets paralyzed instantly until she is picked up by child-protection services.

 

@lufcrazy and @Slyk both pretty much hit the nail on different edges of the head. The real answer is, to me it just sounds more dignified and professional than using monikers (which are used plenty elsewhere, on a forum especially) or lazily putting just a last name (particularly if a common one). I've always liked the idea of a RBR being an institution for posterity, and future readers hopefully appreciating the way they stand out from the chaff with a more formal tone. It also is a matter of respect for the competitors to strive to be journalistically accurate, including details such as diacritics (the special accent marks over letters native to a fighters' language), and matronymics (those several additional family names) for Hispanics etc.

Plus, it amuses me how much it enrages some people. Eschewing informality makes them see red, and I'm happy to play the pretentious elitist matador.
