Maybe relative to his greatness. He could certainly punch a bit, and he wasn't slow. No Roy Jones, though.
He was definitely a great puncher in terms of accuracy, punch selection, and combinations. I wouldn't say he was slow nor did he lack any hurtful punches per se, he just didn't stand out when it came to speed or power itself. He was a great fighter mainly because of his boxing versatility, intelligence, skills, and well rounded game.
A fighter without both speed and power cant be great. Maybe decent or good. There are great fighters who lack speed and great fighters who lack power. Not both imo.
Depends on what we define as great...I guess I would suggest Winky Wright as a guy who fits into the conversation
Jake Lamotta and Dick Tiger are two guys that come to mind. Neither guy was a one punch knockout guy and they typically wore there opponents down with pressure and strength which is different from power. Neither really had any speed that was considered above average as well.
Yep. Lamotta had a 28% ko rate and Tigers was 32%. Both were hard punchers but not one punch power types. I don't think either had exceptional hand or foot speed. They were just hard ass guys that were sound defensively and pressured guys until they broke.
Barney Ross? Certainly not slow, but I’ve never seen him as a speedster. He definitely wasn’t a puncher.
Great pick. Probably you got one of the few cases in boxing history. However it's not properly right he lacked power, he didn't like hitting and raging on opponents, he was content to beat them on 15 rounds (he said in an interview).
