Has anyone else experienced something like this. Shoulder pain for roughly a week after over training? Is there any advice or prognosis info you may offer up? Possible recovery time?

I’m just hoping I haven’t permenantly injured my shoulder from just starting boxing. I’ve only been the the gym like 6 times to train

I never really felt any pain during a workout. Just after my last one for this last wewk. Maybe a little soreness at the end

You probably haven't permanently injured your shoulder, but do NOT punch anywhere near full force with hand weights, and CERTAINLY don't hit a heavy bag with him. Even doing full-range slower shadow boxing is suspect, but that's up for debate. I don't use hand weights as many do because they quickly make my shoulder hurt also. I stopped doing that, and the pain went away. I DO use hand weights for compact shadowboxing, though. Tell your coach that using the weights hurts your shoulders, and you need to not do that. He should have come across this problem many times if he has been around as long as he appears to be. After some time away, maybe try the compact version if you wish.

YOU are in charge of your body. However, HE is in charge of helping you or not, so you have to find a balance.

Youl mentioned pain raising your arm above ur head and you mentioned using hand weights and punching hard.....sounds to me like you got a very slight rotator cuff strain.....you need to stop using hand weights...and get your form built up some muscle memory.....for now take a week off...just 2 light 2 mile jogging sessions....use cbd balm oil its a real great product u wish we had around in the 90s,2000s and first half of 2010s....it really should have u treated and ready to restart after a week or 2....work around it keep it light.....however if things havnt improved....you may have a slight strain......work around it...keep it light

Thanks. I’m still hurting today but I do think it’s ever so slightly better. It started hurting last Tuesday. Then felt better by Friday and then I worked out in another session with him Saturday morning- so now it’s been 3 days since my last workout. Still hurting but not as bad as it was Sunday. It surprises me I hurt myself so easily. Taking your advise. Thanks!

Do not continue shadow boxing with weights pal. It's horrendous for your shoulder. You gonna **** up your shoulder badly long term if you continue. If you really want to use them do it with slow movements at the end of your session to exercise your muscles a bit more, to burn them out, but NEITHER full ROM nor full power. Very slow, control it and punch short, it's more holding weights in your guard for fight endurance and such stuff but do not open your session with it. It's really bad. I saw guys in the gym going full ******ed with it destroying joints left and right.

You should strengthen your rotator cuffs though. Look at some youtube videos how you can strengthen them. It's easy. Do it every second day.

But there are tons of videos on YT and majority is pretty solid.

Rotator cuffs are very important for boxing. But you can injure them quite easily and it's a very bad injury once you have problems. It's no joke.

I would put rotator cuff exercises in your Strength & Conditioning workout not in your boxing workout.

I’ve gone ahead and canceled remaining sessions with this trainer and intend on finding a new one. Last Sunday my shoulder hurt too much to raise my hand up to the ceiling. Today it’s somewhat better, it’s still sore and a little painful but I definitely have full range of motion without pain. It’s more like I’m just aware there’s something going on in it. It’s been a week off. Hopefully another week or so will resolve the issue. This is really all just the result of soreness. There was never a moment where I felt like I injured myself. So I hope I can continue boxing. I just started which is the weird part

A lot of guys that call themselves trainers don't necessarily know what they think they know. One of the things that they either don't understand, or maybe they forget, is that the whole thing is a process, every bit of what goes on in a boxing gym. Whether it is your conditioning, or the development of your shoulder strength, or your ability to slip punches you start where you're at and build from there. Nothing good ever comes from trying to jump ahead.

I’m just hoping that I am able to continue that process and that my shoulder pain is not going to become permanent or chronic. I had zero shoulder issues ever prior to this which started about a week ago

Could be some kind of shoulder impingement. I experienced something similar back when I first started working out on heavy-bags. Lifting heavy weights and not stretching my chest enough made my shoulder especially vulnerable. It hurt waay more when I threw hooks than jabs though, and it made it really hard to keep a tight high guard.

Check out some of the self-diagnostic tests on google or Youtube. You should also check some of the diagnostic tests for rotator cuff tears.

You may need to take a break from punching heavybags, rehab your shoulder, and do physical therapy.

I'm personally against shadowboxing with weights in my hands. It also hurts my shoulders so it's my body telling me dont do it.
