Chuck Liddell responds to Kimbo Slice's latest warning by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Apr 28, 2008 at 12:49 pm ET The back-and-forth media battle between EliteXC heavyweight Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell just entered round three. Liddell struck first when he said a checkered past of beating up a "bunch of guys on the street" is the only reason for Ferguson's popularity. In a YouTube video response, Ferguson warned that Liddell is "only creating a monster" who's going to zip Liddell's mouth shut for good. Liddell struck back over the weekend during an interview with the Dallas-based "Rear Naked Radio" radio show and again questioned Ferguson's body of work. "All I said is fight to someone real," Liddell said. "The only guy he lost to in his street-fight things came into the UFC and lost. Fight a guy that is real and fight a guy... who has a few wins in MMA, and then talk about it." Liddell was referencing Sean Gannon, a former Boston police officer who answered Ferguson's open call for opponents to fight in bare-knuckle bouts. The chaotic fight ended in victory for Gannon. The notoriety he earned from the widely distributed video earned Gannon an invitation to the UFC, where he suffered a bloody first-round TKO loss to Brandon Lee Hinkle. Gannon hasn't fought professionally since the defeat. "Before he talks about fighting me, he might want to think about beating somebody that has a winning record," Liddell said. "He's an Internet sensation who beat up guys at Taco Bell. Come on. How hard is that to do?" Liddell also criticized Bo Cantrell, who was Ferguson's opponent in his second professional fight. "That first fight they had on HDNet, he fought a guy that had been knocked out two times before in less than 30 seconds, and he tapped on his way down in [that] one," Liddell said. "That was three fights that he lost in less than 30 seconds. How many guys do you know who's done that? "Talk about a tomato can." Any chance of this one happening? :yep
Liddell vs Kimbo would be interesting. Liddell would probably starch Kimbo in round 1. However Kimbo is a big strong heavyweight with good power of his own. Anything is possible in MMA.
This one is interesting, and not just because of the possibility for a ko. It is interesting because of the possibility of an upset. I picked Chuck over Ortiz, I think Chuck is better than Ortiz, but I still think Ortiz is more of a sure win over Kimbo than Liddell is at this point. Ortiz has shown a willingness to grapple, and Kimbo would have to fear him on the ground. With his wrestling background, I'd be willing to bet Liddell is also better on the ground than Kimbo. I just don't know if Chuck cares anything about showing his ground game. Frank Shamrock once mentioned that was missing from mma when he was in the UFC, and still missing today, is precision striking. As inexperienced as Kimbo is, his striking skills are as good or better than a lot of pros. He is not on the level of Cro Cop, nor anything like that; but he's definitely got more skills than Couture or Fedor. If he is in the cage with someone that doesn't care about getting him to the ground, it could be a lot of fun. Don't let the Thompson fight fool you. Thompson is 6'5, over 250 lbs., and wanted to get Kimbo on the ground. Chuck does not fit any of those descriptions. We also know that Chuck can be knocked out. Kimbo has yet to have his chin tested by a striker like Chuck, and we already know his stamina is suspect. Still, the fact remains that Kimbo is the bigger stronger fighter with the possibility of facing a Liddell that wants to trade. I'm not saying Kimbo should be favored. I just saying this fight is not a sure win for Liddell.
1/ CHuck is a better wrestler than Tito, by far. 2/Kimbo couldnt knock the walking highlight reel KO victim Thompson with numerous heavy, clean punches. He isn't a big puncher. 3/I dont care if Thompson is 8ft tall and 1000lbs, he's absolute dogdirt; it looked like he'd never even shot a takedown in his life. He sucks period. Anyway Chuck fights at over 220, he is certainly not at a SIGNIFICANT size disadvantage to Kimbo.
I have to agree with the Cantrell coment, that guy is the tomato can of all tomato cans in mma, he loses and loses quick.
I love all the wrestling skills he showed against Jardine. Like I said, Liddell doesn't show much desire to prove his ground skills I never said Kimbo was a big pucher. I said he was a big man. I'm sorry; but to an inexperienced grappler, size is important. I firmly believe Kimbo could learn enough to defeat Thompson more impressively in a rematch. I think Frye(who lost to Thompson) is still capable of defeating Slice. I don't think Frye would stand a chance against Liddell. I'm not trying to say Kimbo would be a logical favorite. I'm just looking at the facts. Liddell can wrestle, but he doesn't. Kimbo appears to be capable of taking a decent shot, though that is still not proven. Liddell can be knocked out. Kimbo is a bigger fighter. Kimbo may not have a lot of one punch power, but his striking skills do look solid. If I had to bet on an outcome; I'd say Kimbo gasses after 2 rounds of stand-up, and is stopped in the 3rd. I just can't rule out the possibility of Kimbo being the bigger stronger guy, and ko'ing someone that is unwilling to take him to the ground.
Chuck shot two perfect double legs on wandy and had no problem putting him down. To imply that Kimbo is half the striker that Couture or Fedor is, let alone Liddell, is criminaly stupid.
