A fighter who fought on his own terms, not flashy or a show off for the fans but got the job done, and that was winning 82 straight since 1964, revenging his three losses. He avenged 8 of the 9 draws that he drew. A fighter who retired with 14 successful title defenses, not many can claim that fact.

I could see Monzon stabbing or shooting Frazier to death, but not knocked him out in a sparring session.

When you watch Monzon sparring, and footage of Frazier sparring against guys like Norton, it makes it seem even more implausible. If anything, Monzon seems more passive in sparring than he did in many fights. I think Vito was just telling stories. Monzon wasn't knocking out any heavyweights in sparring, or anyone, really.

And the idea that Monzon would fly to the U.S. to spar with Frazier of all people - when Monzon never really spent any time in the U.S. at all (one U.S. bout out of 100) - and that he knocked out Joe Frazier and left and no one reported on it is just pure fantasy.

He was never a devastating puncher the likes of Zale , Graziano, Ketchel,
Briscoe, Hart,Valdes, Jackson,Mcclean,Mugabi etc. He was a good puncher, more Marvin Hagler than the names above.
Damn you guys are so sensitive when comes to Monzon.

Well, there's so much ignorance, willful as well as otherwise in this forum, that it's hard not to be. Not implying you so much as others.

Monzon could hit, no question. He didn't KO Benny Briscoe. There's that.

    It didn’t happen.

A pencil legged middleweight attrition puncher flooring Joe Frazier? Total BS.

This does not make sense to me. There is a video with Frazier in an actual contest vs light heavyweight Bob Foster. Foster, who stand a good 6-3 or better, was quickly cut down

Monzon as I said before had 61 KO's in his career from 1963-1977, 82 straight wins from Oct 9 1964. He was not flashy but got the job done, he was his own man, did not want to copy any one.

As great as Marvelous Marvin Hagler was, he could not kayo Bad Bennie either, Valdes did once in 1974.

If they did spar, I could see Monzon scoring a disputed knockdown — catch a guy off balance, half-slip, whatever. I’ve seen enough sparring to know it can happen.

    KO? No way.
