Grey, its amazing now when we look back at this and the stories that circulated. Because that was the story that I heard that caused the broken vertebrae in Jerry's back before the Ellis fight. And that it was his brother Jimmy that rammed Jerry into the jukebox. Whichever is correct, I do know Jerry was in a bodycast after the Ellis fight once it was diagnosed. As for Mike, a friend of mine used to watch Jerry spar all the time at the Main St. Gym and he said he did not pull his punches with the younger, lighter Mike and would give him a going over. Brotherly love.
Pat, check out Jerry's conditioning when he disrobes for the first fight with Frazier. Man, I never saw Jerry so perfectly cut like that. I know he eventually got rid of Johnny Flores as his trainer. But I think Flores had the knack for getting him in shape.
Yeah. I asked the same question on the Quarry documentary a while ago and Rich the Historian told me that. I looked it up and found a 6-minute clip of the fight.
Quarry is the working man's fighter, he eptomizes and flies the flag for all great Contenders & Fighters... and there was also a time when these great Contenders fought each other too. a Great Banner for Boxing, fighters like Quarry.
Did you catch Larry Hagman ( I dream of genie , dallas, ) i the final few minutes . How I fancied that women.... keep well.
He seemed uncharacteristic with his imitation of ali. Seemed much more coherent around '67 He did seem to cut at the most unfortunate times so why did Foreman not want to face him? He said he needed a fight, then took on Norton instead This content is protected
Quarry would have never stood a chance against Frazier and Ali. He was probably at his physical peak in the first Frazier fight and gave Frazier a decent couple of rounds and then got beaten up badly and stopped inside 7 or 8 rounds. He would never have done anything with Ali. People overrate Quarry. He deserves a lot of credit for fighting a lot of tough fights but he wasn't elite.
yeah, by several magnitudes. And we're talking about a washed-up worn-out Alex Miteff on an ill-advised comeback there.
Quarry had had LOADS of fights by the time he faced Ali for the second time. Maybe 50 or 60 pro fights, tough ones too. he might have only been 27 years old but he'd taken a lot of punishment. Drinking doesn't help but his main issue was the punches he was taking.
Agreed. These kind of videos are a godsend with the unseen footage. It certainly makes a refreshing change from the monotonous and regurgitated fantasy fights. It's also one of those threads where we are seeing constructive and friendly viewpoints, which makes a pleasant change.
