Canelo being an all-time great 'without a doubt' is a good joke. There's so much doubt in Canelo's career that it's embarrassing. If Cotto was prime for Floyd, he was prime for Trout. Do all-time greats get shut out by Austin Trout in their prime? Or was he past his best? It's one or the other - or the correct answer: neither.

If Marquez is an all-time great, he's borderline. You'd have to stretch things and overrate things, and then you'd have to stretch things again to argue that Marquez was prime. And then you'd have to ignore the weight differential and the fact that Marquez should be nowhere near welterweight. If that's his only win over a prime all-time great, you really needn't have bothered. A thirty six year old who was cheated on the scales, didn't belong anywhere near the weight and had been fighting for 16 years and arguably isn't even all-time great.

    Yeah.
While I had been suggested to learn english, I found out that non english forums are more realistic.
Canelo get spanked up by 36 y.o Floyd and in his young days get draw with a joruneyman.

If 0 so much matters there.
Buterelo is fighting only in Nevada now as far as I do know.

If canelo isn't an atg then no other current boxer with the exception of pac is one since canelo is better and more accomplished than everyone else. You have to take the bias out when accessing greatness. I'm not a fan of wlad but he's an atg I would never take that away from him. I'm not a fan of Ggg, can't stand him but he's a HOF fighter. Take the bias out of it and evaluate fairly.

Cotto was like 31 when he fought pbf he was the number 1 guy at 154 when pbf fought him he was still prime. He lost to Trout after losing to pbf but he still went on to have big wins including being the lineal champ at 160 and gave canelo a close fight. It was a great win you can't take that away from pbf.

Jmm is an atg he lost to pbf because of skill pbf didn't bully jmm and also pbf is just a stylistic nightmare for him. If you want to say he wasn't prime ok but he koed pac at 147 years later which was a historic victory.

We can argue about the primes of these 3 fighters but all 3 are atg fighters.

Correct. Outside of Pacquiao, there are no current all-time greats.

Cotto fought Mayweather in 2012 and arguably peaked in 2006. He took two vicious beatings before Floyd that obviously had some effect on him as a fighter as seen by the difference in both him and Margarito in their rematch. Neither looked the same fighter that they were in their first fights. He got shut out by Trout the same year as Floyd beat him, if he was prime for one, he was prime for the other. Trout does not shut out prime all-time greats.

If Marquez is an all-timer, it's by the slimmest of margins. Outside of his win over Pacquiao, his best win is like, Casamayor. I'm fairly certain that everybody in the world knows that Marquez was past prime for Pac IV.

Stylistically Trout was a bad match up for him and he didn't shut cotto out either. Yeah he had 2 loses but cotto was still prime when he fought pbf.

Was he past prime for pbf though??? I thought he beat pac in their 3rd match to be perfectly honest but didn't get the nod. I dont think he was past his prime against pbf.

    @George Crowcroft

Ok, so you provided 1973 as a starting point for Mayweather's pro career. That works. Let's assume he's coming out of the 1972 with a Bronze medal in hand, following what is considered to be an appalling decision in the semis. So, he has that cachet working for him as he turns pro.

We're in the era of same day weigh ins, but I still think Floyd can make 130lbs based on his work ethic and the fact that he never put on that much weight following the weigh in. But he'll start off straddling 130 and 135, face the usual suspects to begin his career before stepping up in 1975. At that point, following wins over guys like, say, Rudy Barro and Jimmy Heair, he beats a fringe contender like Arturo Leon and finds himself in line for a title shot by at the latest, the end of that year.

    Options are:

Jr. Lightweight- Ben Villaflor (WBA) and Kuniaki Shibata/Alfredo Escalera (WBC)
Lightweight:- Roberto Duran (WBA) and Guts Ishimatsu (WBC)

I wouldn't rule out pre-prime Floyd going directly into a fight with Duran, and if he fights in place of Lampkin, he probably does pretty well before getting overtaken on the cards by a late round surge. At the very least, he has his moments and avoids getting stretchered before making it to the final bell. At that point, he had more power, more speed and more juice than Lampkin and Ortiz, both of whom made it to the final rounds.

But, if we assume that Floyd is taking a more careful approach to his career, let's assume then that he faces Villaflor in Hawaii for the 130lb championship. (He probably does so anyway, regardless of whether or not he faces Duran first. It's a solid payday for both champion and challenger, and can be staged in Hawaii, where Villaflor had a rabid fanbase). So, in mid-to-late 1975, Mayweather faces and I think defeats the slower but hard-punching Villaflor over 15 to win his first championship.

    To be continued...

Canelo's getting there. Whomever comes out of the Flyweight 4 Kings series probably earns a Top 100 spot (which is my point of demarcation for ATG status).
