I think Lennox poses significant difficulty as the fighter we know him to be...but had he trained in the Joe Louis era lennox cannot have developed into the same fighter. Lennox would still be as tall but he wouldn’t have become as heavy because he would have lost so much coordination gaining that kind of weight in the way it was possible in those days. He therefore become a much less relevant fighter. Lennox would have been forced to become an even leaner fighter than we knew him to be and half as strong. To pace himself over the 15 rounds Lennox would have had to develop a different ratio of cardiovascular strengths...it would have changed elements of his fighting style. The savvy Lennox showed controlling pace against equally large and slower paced fighters wouldn’t be required. This means he has to box with Joe Louis. It means he has to control distance without holding and work for the full three minutes. So I just can’t see Joe Louis not knocking Lennox out. I just can’t. I fear that version of Lennox Lewis, the only kind of Lennox Lewis to exist at the time Joe Louis did, could quite easily join the ranks of the many lost generations of tall heavyweights that failed to dominate boxing between the years of Jess Willard and Riddick Bowe.
I have Joe stopping him within 6 or 7 depending upon how much Lewis wants to engage. Alot of times even with all his physical advantages he seemed reluctant to engage.
I suppose that Mercer and Holyfield came closest to giving us the blueprint for doing it. What McCall and Rahman did hardly amounts to a blueprint.
Lewis is the smartest, most talented, coordinated, and dangerous big man I've ever seen...so to answer the thread question...I say yes.
He is when he’s controlling the pace and dictating things. But If Frank Bruno could upset his tempo and outbox Lewis though...I’m pretty sure Joe Louis could do a more impressive job without tiring like Frank did.
I think I might agree with the hypothesis of this thread, but the idea that Lewis is faster than Louis is ridiculous...
The Pepe Correra version of Lewis had some struggles, he wasn't a balanced boxer yet. Bruno and Tucker made him look awkward. McCall was able to zone in on one flaw it got him through. Joe Louis had his struggles too including being knocked out by Old Max Schmeling. At the top of their respective games its a different story.
That is exactly what Lewis isn't. He is a big heavyweight with a good defense, RING IQ, boxing skills and power.
