Rewatched the first half of Hatton - Mayweather yesterday. Cortez' refereeing was worse than I ever remember it being, and it always looked bad. This is the only fight I've seen Cortez so poor and biased towards one fighter, and maybe the only one where Jim Watt's commentary was on the money.

Cortez breaks them in the first 3 rounds almost constantly, any time they're close, he breaks, several times Mayweather looks at him for help, he breaks.
Floyd responds to Hatton's so called dirty fighting (and I can't see anything particularly dirty from Hatton in this fight, that might be because he never got chance), by using his elbow controlling Hatton's head to give him room to punch. Cortez calls him out several times, doesn't give him a warning, doesn't take a point. Mayweather turns his back and Hatton hits him on the back of the head, not hard, once, and gets a point taken.
From this point it all goes downhill for Hatton, he loses his head, as you probably would in such a situation.

The first half of the fight was pretty even, even HBO gave the first half to Hatton. It's entirely possible Mayweather would have taken control in the second half as he often did and won on points, but he only knocked Hatton out because Hatton was fighting the ref too.
Hatton never got his chance to impose himself on Mayweather, he was so quick on his feet and early on would have mauled this version of Floyd a bit how Maidana did old Floyd. Whatever the result It could have been a modern classic without Cortez as the third man in the ring.

Anti Hatton fans can say he was dirty throughout his career, but he got royally shafted in this one. Mayweather might have won anyway, this is not the point. (And Hatton was arguably winning early, that's without being able to work inside) Whether Cortez' was being intentionally bias or not, it was the worst refereeing job I've seen.

Cortez is among my least favorites

Jeff Fenech had the same criticism of Cortez following the first Azumah Nelson fight

    quote:

Him being Azumah Nelson and being under the Don King banner helped him because I believe the referee (Joe Cortes) didn’t let me do what I wanted to do, breaking up the fight, let Azumah hit me after the bell. People want to say I’m a dirty fighter but I only retaliate when someone does something to me. I’ve got no need to do something dirty at the start because I’m busy trying to cut the ring off and put pressure on. Like I said, although I won the fight, nobody tried to help me like that. The judging, the referring, everythingwas against me.”

Having been a huge fan of Kostya, I was no fan of Hatton and hadnt been interested enough in him to watch many of his fights.

That said, watching the May fight, I thought that Joe Cortez should have been awarded the victory as he controlled the action more than either fighter.

I haven't seen Mayweather-Hatton since it happened, but I was at Hatton's bout with Castillo, which was also refereed by Cortez. To see Cortez go from a 'Let them fight it out' stance in Hatton-Castillo, to 6 months later a heavily involved approach with Mayweather-Hatton, struck me as odd.

Hatton was fighting two opponents that night. Cortez is a disgrace. From his protection of Floyd in the Hatton fight to his bungling of the Floyd/Ortiz fight. An obvious Floyd flunky.

Watched the Tzsyu Hatton fight last year and was shocked how biased and incompetent Diamond Dave Parriss was in that one, and how he let Wicky fight the filthiest fight I've ever seen.

Cortez was a biased scumbag in that fight. Blatantly corrupt.

Depends who the house fighter is.

Ricky got a lot of slack in fights he won because he was at home. Works both ways.

yes Hatton got shafted here. But so did a lot of guys taking him on at home.
