http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131747/ http://www.phantompunchmovie.com/index.php Check that **** out. Ving Rhames as Sonny Liston. Robert Townsend directing. Don't know if it will be good, but I'll be looking forward to it.
Good..It's about time sonny gets some recognition other then that ali fight..liston didnt fight ali..definately had to take a dive
Wow. Townsend has made some crap movies. Hopefully he doesn't ruin the subject matter. On another note Ving is 50 years old. That should make him right about Liston's speed.
He's a bit young for the role, isn't he? Liston was, what, 68 when he made his pro debut? :think Actually, I like this casting. Ving is very good at doing surly and menacing; he did a good job in that almost decent prison boxing film which was basically Tyson-Lewis with handicrafts.
for someone who talks alot of **** about an ATGs speed, i would love to see clips of your big mouth in the ring. lets see how much speed you got tough guy. liston KO 1 seamus.
Given the circumstances of the fight and Liston’s life it is understandable that some boxing fans think Liston took a dive against Ali. However Liston’s behavior during the Clay fight makes clear that Liston did not throw the fight against Clay. Specifically, Liston’s actions during the 5th round make clear the fight was legitimate. Clay fought the 5th round blinded by a foreign substance and had to survive a furious attack from Liston in the process. There are two theories for how Clay’s eyes were damaged: 1. Liston put a foreign substance on his gloves to intentionally damage Clay’s eyes or 2. the solution for the cut got into his eyes. If Liston and his corner intentionally tried to damage Clay’s eyes it is clear the fight was legitimate. If the mafia’s intentions were to have Liston lose, why place that plan in jeopardy by blinding Clay because of the possibility that Clay would quit. If it was unintentional, Liston’s behavior during the 5th proves the fight was legitimate. If Liston were to take a dive, he would not attack a damaged Clay because there was no guarantee that Clay could stand up to the attack. He would have stayed away from Clay and given him time to recover. Instead Liston attacked Clay trying to knock him out because the fight was legit.
Whenever i see ving i am reminded of 'that' scence in pulp fiction.... 'Bring out the gimp'! Pool ball anyone!!!!
In his prime I would have picked the late Woody Strode for the part,of course he would have had to let his hair grow!
This film will be utter crap for boxing fans. It will be full of invented "main characters", totally fabricated sub-plots etc. I check out the cast list and apart from Liston and one or two others, the characters are entirely fictional. I do like Ving Rhames though. He's also played a charcter that's at least in part a thinly veiled depiction of a mythological Tyson, fighting bareknuckles in jail for a **** conviction, in the film "Undisputed". But I'm gonna try to avoid this Liston film. I hate films that butcher basic historical facts.
I am going to run "cut solution" got in Clay's eyes theory by a fight cut man I know. Why wouldn't the same solution blind Liston's eyes if it got in his eyes too?
