I think he probably does deserve it. But, admittedly, he beat VERY few elite fighters.

Yeah cos elite business is to cherry pick and then he was not enough old.
Now he is old, maybe cherry pickers will offer him to fight.
For a lot of casual fans surname matters more than are they old or no.

I also suspect that Povetkin and Pulev now will have next offers to fight. They now are enough old or " old " too book fight with. Ofc Pulev will be more enough old after some 6 months- 1 year and then:p casual flowchart.;):nonono

HOF and belts are for fans. Mainly for westerners, to sell fights better than casual fight might sell.
Belts likes for boxing orgs and they love belts, media loves belts and rankings and HOF, ATG and talk about GOATS.

I do not care so much about western name calling fans, their opinions or belts nor also about GGG ( he doesn't likes me ) nor also about Buterelo ( he is very boring, all these comments, LOL, he is damn boring and annoying boxer ).

You've put together a decent list there...so respect for doing that.

RJJ and Hagler in their primes would have good chances and I would pick them as favorites against GGG - but not heavy favorites.

Monzon was just a great all-around fighter. In some ways he's kind of like "the fighter the US media says Canelo is...but isn't quite". Very good chin, huge overhead right, really good at setting up with his jab. Can fight pressure style or box. This fight is close to a coin flip.

I thought McCallum might have done enough to win both fights against Toney. But I think GGG would read McCallum and I think Toney stays in his shell against GGG.

Nunn is like a somewhat-improved Danny Jacobs (assuming Danny were to honor a 160 lb limit ;)). I still marvel at the fact that he caught Kalambay the way he did. Got caught by Toney...

I have a huge admiration for Kalambay's technical skills and he probably should get more recognition because taking Graham's 0 was no easy feat. He might have given GGG some serious trouble...the way a fighter like BJS would today...but I think Kalambay eventually gasses or gets cut off and GGG could pretty much walk right through his punches.

Eubank Sr - up until and including the first Benn fight - probably has a better chance. Awkward and hard to hurt, but his best shots were thrown at close range. Not a place I'd want to be against GGG. It would be a fun fight though!

Benn had great power. He did not have a great chin and would eat a big counter from GGG sooner or later.

Hopkins had that way of leading around fighters and laying traps. Works great on uneducated guy like Trinidad. I grant you that GGG is not the hardest guy to hit - but GGG is not uneducated. In some respects Hopkins kind of falls prey to the same issue as GGG - not a lot of truly great fighters to fight when he was at his prime at 160 lbs. Did not disgrace himself against RJJ back in 1993. I see this as being a stinker of a tactical fight - though I supposed Hopkins had a tendency to win those!

Again, credit to you for putting together this list.

Thanks I appreciate your opinions. Had I seen GGG have success against higher caliber fighters I might agree with you. I cannot extrapolate performances against guys like Lemiuex and Curtis and assume they translate up to guys like the ones I've listed. For my Danny Jacobs was his step up fight and he failed to impress me and if I'm being honest I've never considered Danny Jacobs an elite fighter. Also I think you are seriously underestimating the experience gap between guys like Michael Nunn and Danny Jacobs. In my opinion there is a huge skill gap between them and the amount of experience they have against elite boxers cannot be replaced but that's why we debate opinions.

Dude, you are probably the only person on planet earth that thinks that way. You cant force people to see things that dont match with what they saw. The reality is Canelo was as lucky as Joe Biden to come out ahead in this series. The difference is we dont have to be worried about being caceled if we tell it like it is.

Since A. Canelo is very boring to watch and annoying style B. Annoying his fans in internet.
    C. Canelo fights in hometown
    D. Cherry picks.

I don't care nor about his fight record, ranking or belts or his fans in internet.

He is not less boring than Octopus.

As far as that Danny Jacobs fight went...he probably came in 15 lbs or so heavier than GGG and treated that fight as a survival test. He never really sat down into any of his punches. All his tactics seemed to focus on forcing constant resets. He landed maybe 2 or 3 solid punches all night. I give him 3 rounds for being busy...but it wasn't a brave performance. I wouldn't say that Danny J. fought a negative fight, exactly, but he came in like a LHW and wouldn't commit.

Agreed that none of Curtis, Lemiuex, and Jacobs are elite. GGG more or less ruined the first two and Jacobs has not looked good since.

As far as extrapolation goes - you may not be willing to do it. That's fair. But I think there were quite a few fighters (e.g. the Charlos, *maybe* Errol Spence) who had the frames for 160 lbs who might have stepped up to big money against GGG - and none of them were willing to it. And I blame extrapolation...

All true. Let Canelo fight Bivol or Beterbiev or even Meng Fanlong at LWH - then he has my respect. He doesn't get it for stopping a used-up Kovalev.

For me, even wins against charlos and spence wouldn't convince me ggg is in the echelon of the guys I mentioned. I see guys like Minter, Sibson and Hamsho as better fighters than the charlos and they're all legitimate middle weights unlike Spence who's never fought anywhere but 147. I don't blame ggg for the lack of quality on his resume but I can't just assume he breezes through top quality fighters either. I like GGG, I think he's on the same level as Canelo but I would never rate canelo among the greatest at any weight either

"GGG has a chance against Roy Jones Jr. at 160".

Now I've heard everything. Roy would have made GGG look like a bum.
