I wasn't impressed to be honest, I think if that were Vitali or Lewis in there then Thompson would have been destroyed. He (thomson, and I haven't seen him before) looked quite durable but he had lead in his boots and no boxing brain. Wlad took the jab from him by touching Thompsons right but the left was there all night and Thompson didn't throw it because he didn't know what to do without the right lead. Wlad could have sat down and blasted him out a lot earlier. It reminded me a lot of his fight with McCline, shut the other guy down but didn't impose himself on him. Steward should teach Wlad Lewis' uppercut if possible. He tried the uppercut a couple of times but his execution was very poor. It's a risky punch to throw but how risky is a non-punching statue? Wlad's a good fighter and a very likable sportsman but, he's not a great fighter. That said, he can go down as a great champion if he holds his titles for a long time a la Joe Louis or Larry Holmes. An Ali or Liston, Frazier, Tyson, Holyfield Lewis etc. derive their status mainly from victories over other very good to great fighters, Klitschko doesn't have those wins and there's nobody out there or on the way up for him to get them in the future but, he is a head if not head and shoulders above his competition so I think he has it in him to win the other two of the three big titles and have a long reign. Ufortunately for him he'll always suffer in hypothetical h2h matchups. I think we should be seeing more from him than we have in his last few fights, he needs to be destroying the likes of Thompson Ibragimov. He has it in him, physically at least.
At the end of the day he overcame adversity and out willed Thompson with his adaptability and power....Thompson would have held his own with any of the other champs
Thompson was a very difficult opponent. The guy has a bigger reach than Wlad and his style will cause difficulties for anyone + he has a rock hard chin. The fight wasn't the best but you could tell when this fight was made it wasn't going to a barn burner.
It was a very exciting fight. Thompson did good early with body shots & the right jab. Wlad took awhile to adjust to the southpaw style & Tony is an awkward fighter so it also took awhile for WK to time his punches, especially his jab. Wlad took control when he went to the body himself and since he couldn't land the left jab he started to lead off with the right, using it to jab & open up Tony's defense. There was the regular, sloppy, tripping & falling that usually occurs when an orthodox fighter meets a southpaw but it wasn't a total brawl either. All in all I recommend it for REAL boxing fans............:deal
Thompson's high guard & long arms made it hard for Wlad to settle into a grove. Not many fighters could cover up as easily or completely as Tony did against Wladimir's jab or straight rights.
The haters had a group meeting and prepared a statement prior to posting their opinions of the fight.
I thought Wlad fought very well last night. Thompson came out aggressive early but after he tasted Wlad's power in the second he went into his high guard defensive mode. Thompson was also very good at slipping Klitschko's right hand and was trying to set up big counters from the second on. He caught Wlad with a few good shots but Klitschko never looked panicked or hurt, in fact he got more aggressive after taking good punches which I liked to see. Klitschko's body punches looked much better in this fight, and Thompson took some huge shots before going down, he has a very solid chin. Great atmosphere in the arena last night, place exploded when the KO shot landed and I as well as the rest of the crowd found the fight very entertaining. They do a great job with the boxing shows in Germany I must say. I haven't seen any television broadcasts yet, how was the HBO commentary last night? What did they think of Wlad's performance? Not surprised that I've seen a few threads on here calling the fight boring and Wlad and Thompson bums even though they put on a good fight last night, the idiots never fail to make themselves heard.
you would have to be completely blinded by hate to say such a thing. Wlad threw more right hands than he did jabs altogether :deal
Nah, he looked bad. That's not a knock on him in general though. some fighters fight down to the level of their opponents and that was clearly the case with Wlad. If he fights a genuine challenger, he steps it up and fights to his true potential. He looked awful in fact.... but he is still the best HW in the world. I would LOVE him to KTFO of Haye ASAP to shut down that particular bandwagon. And I'm 1000% sure he would do just that if that fight were to happen.
