My point is that Sharkey fought every size, shape and style of heavyweight imaginable, and he proved to be a very difficult man to stop. The idea that Byrd's power is going to be a major factor in this fight is frankly ridiculous! The idea that Byrd's size is going to be a factor is also ridiculous!
Let me rephrase then. The only people who stopped Sharkey in any meaningful context in 50 + fights were Jack Dempsey, Primo Carnera, and Joe Louis (if it is fair to include Louis). I am going to take a wild guess that Byrd wouldn't be in much danger of stopping him.
Byrd stops him. Sharkey has nothing to keep Chris off him. He utterly lacks the twitch and reflexes and skill. Chris lands at will until a ref takes pity and stops the proceedings.
Obviously Sharkey was not the most consistent quantity, but at his best I think he was a little bit better than Byrd.
They are both defensive specialists, but Sharkey is clearly better on offence, and the better finisher. When two defensive guys go at it, often the man with the better offence carries the day.
