How good was this British heavyweight? He stopped Joe Bugner, went the distance with Henry Akinwande for the WBO title, he won a couple minor belts during his career. Is apparently a fitness fanatic and did some acting as well. Any info is much appreciated.

He was a good, entertaining heavyweight. Too bad his career was so short.

I posted this in a Henry Akinwande thread a couple weeks ago.

Long story short, Scott Welch was the UK's version of Tommy Morrison, except Welch had a better chin. But he retired to become a movie star (and it worked out about as well as it did for Morrison). But instead of starring Rocky V and losing to the 60-year old midget Sylvester Stallone he appeared in Snatch and had to lose to the 30-year old midget Brad Pitt ... after launching Brad Pitt into unconsciousness.

Let's put it this way, in 1997, when Akinwande beat him, I'd have taken Scott Welch over Morrison. I was trading VHS tapes with a guy from England at the time and was a big fan of Welch. Always a fun watch. Too bad his career was so short.

Actually, this is a good interview with Welch a few months back. About 59 minutes in, he talks about the night he fought in Vegas on the undercard to when Zolkin challenged Akinwande for the WBO title, Botha challenged Moorer for the IBF belt, and Holyfield challenged Tyson for the WBA belt.

Welch says in here that the Klitschkos changed their style and copied Akinwande, which I agree with.

I don't agree with that. The brothers had different styles, completely different technique and their mindsets were worlds apart. Therefore, how could they both copy Akinwande? Too many people fall into the trap of lazily throwing both of their names out there as if they were at all synonymous.

What normally happens is people say that they were boring, they were "jab and grab" artists, they had boring personalities etc. This is really only more so true for Wladimir.

Welch was a decent British-level heavyweight.
If he was around today he'd be somewhere around Dillian Whyte's and Hughie Fury's level.

His best fights were the ones against James Oyebola if I remember rightly.

It's sad what happened to Big Bad James. Murdered in 2007 while working as a bouncer in a nightclub.

Yes - I remember seeing him on the Gloves Are Off - The Heavyweights (seems like a hundred years ago now) and he came across as very down to Earth and matter of fact, as well as a bit of a laugh.

    Great in that Snatch scene.

Should have gotten more tv work.

His death was totally pointless and ridiculous. Shot dead for helping staff who were telling some dickheads to stop smoking. Losing by all accounts a very decent guy for something as trivial as that is heartbreaking. Corrie Sanders death was similar. Just needless and tragic.

He gave Gypsy Brad quite the pummeling but he forgot to protect himself at all times.

And while you belittle Mr. Pitt, he had quite the right hand in that movie. Nearly killed Gorgeous George.

The lack of perspective by some in the modern age is alarming.
