First time I've watched this since it took place. I recall when I first saw it how poised I felt Kenty was at the beginning of each round and how he would start out delivering some sizzling combos on O'Grady, which I agree with now also. I also thought he fought well each round especially when Sean would give him a bit of space. However, there were many rounds I felt Kenty was leading only to get battered by another O'Grady flurry. Sean's power really tipped the scales for me. Anyways, here is how I saw it.

    Round 1: 10-9 Kenty
    Round 2: 10-8 O'Grady (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 4: 10-9 Kenty
    Round 5: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 8: 10-8 O'Grady (scores a knockdown)
    Round 9: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 10: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 11: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 12: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 13: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 14: 10-9 O'Grady
    Round 15: 10-9 O'Grady

    Total: 148-136 O'Grady

I think I had it wider than most, but felt Kenty put up one hell of a fight, regardless.

I want to comment on something else about the fight - the overall commentary and presentation of the broadcast. I loved it.

I watch most fights that I'm scoring with the sound down, in part because I don't want to be influenced by the announcer. But I watched this one with the sound on, including the pre-fight background pieces on the fighters and of course the announcement by Cosell that Joe Louis had died and his eulogy of Louis. Cosell could be many things but what he was at his best was a world class announcer who could carry a broadcast singlehandedly and bring the viewer along the whole way. I thought his calling of the action was great and his interview with O'Grady at the end was nice too ("You are not a club fighter. You're a world champion!").

Just as a point of comparison, here's my scoring of the fight the first time I watched it. I had it wider for O'Grady that time. You can take my tally from the scorecard I posted yesterday though @PhillyPhan69.

Sean O'Grady v Hilmer Kenty (original scorecard)

1 9-10 (close, cracking start from both fighters)
2 10-8 (I had this pretty close before O'Grady dropped Kenty)
    3 10-9 (terrific stuff)
4 9-10 (close. Good recovery from Kenty)
5 10-9 (clear O'Grady round as he had Kenty in trouble but gets a bad cut - his skin is like paper)
    6 10-9
7 10-9 (great action and another big round for O'Grady who hurts Kenty again)
    8 10-8 (Kenty down again)
9 10-9 (good round, Kenty had his moments but another in the bag for O'Grady)
10 9-10 (best round for Kenty for a while)
11 10-10 (great round - Kenty had O'Grady backing up and seemingly in trouble but then he fires back and has Kenty agaimst the ropes)
12 10-9 (good, dominant round from O'Grady. He is way ahead now)
13 10-9 (close, both fighters are tired now and showing it)
14 10-9 (Kenty barely surviving now)
    15 10-9

    O'Grady 147-137 Kenty

Half time! Had a busy week and finally getting around to this now. 8 rounds down and O’Grady has established control.

Cosell certainly has limitations as a color commentary guy, including his belly punch KD, but he has enough charisma and enthusiasm to turn everything he touches into an event.

Kenty boxes well in round 1, and O’Grady hangs in with a strong early body attack with both landing several clean hard punches, but Kenty nips the round.

2 Kenty seems a little wide on his punches and isn’t sitting down on them like he was in round 1, O’Grady is taking the round narrowly when he drops Kenty in the closing seconds.

3 O’Grady is working beautifully from midrange attacking the body and not Kenty is trying to keep it at long range but not able to land enough and O’Grady is patient in getting into range to land himself.

4 Close round, but Kenty doing much better! His punches are crisper and short, straight and compact rather than his wide swings of the previous 2 rounds. Very close but I felt Kenty nipped another one.

5 Kenty starts well but gets backed to the ropes midway, and O’Grady turns it up and works the body solid. O’Grad turns up the tempo and rocks Kenty who comes off of the ropes with a butt (intentional? Not sure but initiated by Kenty for sure coming off of the ropes...much different than the Watt butt which seemed accidental with both guys moving forwards at the same time), O’Grady is cut.

6 Very close difficult to score round (4 was close as well) O’Grady seems bothered by the cut early on but settles in midway through. I would have no problem with anyone who scored this even or for either guy.

7 Kenty just can’t seem to get this fight to the pace or the space he needs and O’Grady is taking control.

8 O’Grady definitely in control and drops Kenty again....this time halfway through rather than in the closing seconds of 2. He does a great job and shows courage just surviving the round.

O’Grady in control! Fun fight through 8 rounds! Well worth checking out if you have not seen it or seen it in a while.

O’Gradys body work, in close and at range is classic to watch.

I don’t know what is more impressive O’Gradys performance or the heart of Kenty in taking this beating.

in 10 Kenty scored some solid combos only to be met and matched by O’Grady who drives him back each time. Kenty rocks him good in the final 40 seconds but O’Grady still moves forward. Not enough for a Kenty to take it on my card but I can see why some did or would.

11 Kenty rocks O’Grady midway through and had bern using his jab the sharpest he had in rounds...seems on his way to taking the round and maybe shifting the momentum but O’Grady is ferocious tonight and pressures Kenty for the final half of the round leaving him absorbing blows with his back to the ropes.

Props to Kenty for one of the gutsiest performances while getting pummeled. But he had no quit in him, he kept throwing even after his feet and legs offered little movement. He was outgunned but he showed a champions heart. He certainly deserves a thread!

O’Grady was just ruthless and relentless. Even in 12-14 where he slows his output down he still lands more and better. Every time Kenty rocks him he battles back harder turning the tables.

I can see why SRL-Hearns won fight of the year but this fight deserves to at least be in the conversation and runner ups. This is a fun fight even after all these (40) years!

I was thinking about this, Philly. No question about it that Leonard-Hearns was the event of the year and it lived up to the pre-fight hype and had the drama of Leonard coming from behind for the win but in terms of pure action (although not competitiveness on the cards) O'Grady v Kenty was probably superior. However, Boza v Limon was even better so I think that could legitimately be considered the best fight of the year in pure action terms.

Pryor-Johnson was fight of the yr for KO & deserved it. Arguello-Mancini was better too.

Geez I watched this fight live, I'm getting old. I liked Sean and as has been pointed out his father ruined his career. And,,,,he was a very good announcer.

Love the consensus compilation and putting all the scores in one post so we don’t have to pick through it @PhillyPhan69 — this is a great exercise so please keep it up.

I forgot that. Yeah, you're right, KO rated it FOTY. I would personally rate Boza-Limon as the best fight I've seen from that year but Leonard-Hearns was the fight of the year in terms of spectacle and it lived up to the hype.
