They lost right to BT very quickly. DAZN also will not be picking up all the rights. They will target one of smaller packages.

the thing that works in DAZNs favour is that they are a global platform. Only have to look at how Netflix blows Sky out of the water in the entertainment field.

I have heard rumours BTs deal with the UFC is coming up and DAZN are very interested in those rights also

You are forgetting. They become PPV fighters in one country. It’s extremely rare that a fighter or fight become PPV in multiple countries.

some providers in some countries pay next to nothing in broadcast rights. DAZN can do what they do with Canelo and buy the global rights.

let’s say a UK fighter sells 500k PPV buys. Which is a rarity. That’s £10m and the provider usually takes a 35% cut leaving £6.5m. Most of these level fights are only picked up in 10 countries max half the time. The US rights for a fight like Campbell vs Loma would have been around $150-200k. Most Dillian Whyte fights weren’t picked up at all until DAZN started showing them.

DAZN will come in and say that PPV fight you were thinking of. We will give you a flat £8-10m for it to screen it globally and you don’t have to sell any PPVs at all.

no other platform can do that. It’s the reason at the time the number one PPV fighter in Canelo took the deal.

I’m surprised about this, but all the signs were there to be fair.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sky gradually pull out of boxing completely. Whilst Adam Smith will be out on his ear (unless he gets a cushty position at DAZN), who is big enough domestically outside of Eddie’s stable to demand any sort of real money?

    • Warren is happy with BT and a fairly mediocre stable
    • Wasserman / Sauerland don’t have many UK fighters to justify a UK deal yet
    • The rest is the domestic range of promoters, Hennessey / Wood / Hobson who whilst between them might have a good go at it individually aren’t going to offer much.
The only choice Sky has really, if they are staying in boxing, is to open up to all promoters and not cut anyone off like they have done for the last decade.

Glad about this.. we're just seeing each sport being dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world.

The sooner we have a separate 'netflix-style' subscription for each sport the better.

That’s how I see it. DAZN have simply GOT TO target one of them smaller packages which currently Amazon / BT have.
I just wonder if Eddie will move the whole Matchroom sports over to DAZN too?

Sky Sports price is absolutely scandalous as a stand alone package.

My guess is that DAZNs strategy will be to obtain package B which is the 5:30pm kick offs it’s the one they will see the most benefit from. The 5:30pm kick offs will fall straight into the Saturday fight night. They will likely also create programming around that similar to soccer Saturday.

they will also likely try to pick up the UFC rights and the rest of Matchrooms rights when they become available. That will give them darts and snooker which are sports that have a hardcore fan base but low cost

That will be the plan as it allows DAZN to pick up content and increases the global viewing abilities of the likes of Darts

People don't want hundreds of channels to scroll through anymore. TV packages are as good as dead. I'll pay for Netflix, boxing, football and F1. Nothing else at all is required and it's the same kind of thing for most people (maybe the odd programme on terrestial TV).

It was great value before BT came along then the others.

Paying much more for much less is how it really should be advertised given the plethora of sport lost in the past 10 years.

I think so too - to my knowledge there isn't a single high brow online streaming package dedicated to sport - i.e. Amazon has sport but that isn’t it’s main arm. There’s definitely a gap in the market for it.

Sky have been bad for boxing in recent years, screwing people for often mediocre ppvs and not investing extra money to make good Saturday Fight Night shows. Whyte v Povetkin and Chisora v Parker £20 each on top of expensive packages, they are having a laugh.

How long is left on the Darts contract, will Hearn look to take that over to DAZN?

I did hear Adam Smith on comms last night, sounded as bad as he does for boxing. Must be looking for his next role.

Sky sports over the last few years have lost Champions league, la liga, wwe and now Matchroom. Didn't they lose an Ashes series a couple of years ago too. Whilst this has been going on the sky sports subscription continues to rise.

My personal opinion is that the quality of Hearn shows over the last couple of years have declined. It wasn't that long ago there was a UK show on every other other week. Now it's once every 4 or 5 weeks. He has spread himself to thin putting cards on across Europe and America whilst neglecting the UK market.
