I can see DAZN bidding for secondary Premier League rights if the league wants all the games to be broadcast in the UK as they are now. I don’t have Sky currently and would happily pay £6 a month for Matchroom shows on DAZN provided there were at least a couple of domestic shows per month. What they could do is have a “Premium Tier” for say a tenner a month that included PPV level fights on DAZN as well. Interesting to see how this all plays out- the announcement should be made very soon.
The netball is all broadcast on YouTube as well which is downright bizarre given Sky usually only gives away the odd piece of content on there. A day pass to Sky Sports really should be about £5 with a month being £20. It’s currently £10 for a day pass and around £30 for a month standalone streaming. In the current climate of streaming services that’s way too much.
This is true. You need a broad range of sports as you still need to fill the actual calander. There is a reason Sky have made sure to keep home English cricket, Rugby League and Summer tour Rugby Union internationals. When the football season ends you need high level sport to limit the amount of people that will cancel until football starts again. Setanta and espn UK big problem was the Premier league games they held the rights too. They had the worst packages you could get not having any of the big games so it wasn't the most attractive propersition for a football fan. DAZN will need a key popular sport that can do the heavy lifting for Subscriptions and then get the smaller sports around it. The big difference between DAZN and say Setanta is unlike Setanta DAZN can survive while they wait for the sports rights to go to tender even if its running at a loss. Setanta were desperately trying to get subscriptions to keep the lights on.
What I find bizarre with sky sports box office is if as a non sky customer I'd have to pay for a web pass. Wouldn't pay the extortionate prices anyway but it's just as easy to find an illegal stream as it is to pay for a stream and then go through the hassle or hdmi cables and such. I'm not suggesting I do this, but they must wonder why people stream. As other posters mentioned, the day passes for football are too much and it's all a hassle rather than pressing a button on the TV and it being right there. I've paid for dazn and hope they keep reasonable prices for one off events. Too many platforms these days that it's often not worth bothering. Over exposure can be counter productive. I've lost interest in the football entirely these days
One of my biggest beefs with Sky, is that I pay the same price for a PPV as non subscribers. I don't believe it's fair, I pay all year around, I have done for years/decades. I get no "deal" or any benefit when it comes to PPV events, my loyalty is not worth a toss to Sky so I'm going to sack off Sky Sports at the end of the football season. Made the decision this weekend, I'm just sick of Sky now, they look to have lost the boxing anyway, I honestly believe they will lose the Football in a couple of years. Sky Sports are finished, they charge ridiculous amounts of money for a substandard service.
Came to the same conclusion a while ago mate. They had me over a barrel with Formula 1, but even that isn't enough now. Can't be that long until F1 moves to someone like DAZN or sets up their own streaming service. Give it 10 years we'll look back in disbelief how we paid for stuff like Sky for so long.
If lots of normal people are using 'illegal' streams, it means the paid service is awful. Look at how many people used to download pirated music and films until Spotify and Netflix came along. When decent services comes along for sports the same thing will happen. Only a matter of time.
You are right, but people who used to torrent films still do so, and it was and still is a surprisingly small consumer segment, a largely different population to those who pay for Netflix. The biggest Netflix demographic is young females, which is a tiny segment of the torrenting population. Spotify and Amazon music cover far more ground in terms of content than Netflix. That, and the fact that they offer much more of the convenience element than Netflix is why I have used the former and not the latter.
14 million Netflix subscribers in the UK, over 10 million Amazon Prime subscribers. Then there's all the people sharing accounts Talking well over half the country having legit access to these streaming services. How many of those would have been using torrents or going further back having pirated DVDs. Pretty much everyone I know used to have pirated DVDs, now they all have Netflix or Amazon Prime. You can see the clear vision from DAZN. It'll go that way eventually (although personally think each sport should have their own services) But there's a lot of obstacles in the way yet, namely the number of pockets being lined by the current (shoddy) services.
I've done a fair amount of formal research into torrenting and its relationship with the advent of legal streaming services. The notion that Netflix users are former regular users of torrenting is a misconception. Netflix is also becoming an increasingly different and independent enterprise. It's not the case that people have simply moved from torrenting to Netflix.
I'm sure it's not the case Netflix users used to be literally torrenting every weekend. But look at every way you could obtain videos and music illegally; downloading, copying CDs / DVDs, sharing files, streaming sites etc. Years ago everyone 'knew a guy' who could get this stuff if they didn't get it themselves. All you hear about these days is streaming and loaded firesticks.. and that's down to sports services being so poor and horribly overpriced. Maybe I'm going further back than you, but the main point still stands. Get a decent service in and the 'illegal' stuff will massively reduce.
The music industry was fighting an unwinnable war against piracy. It was a joke for how long they refused to change. Once streaming services were launched you took a lot of the piracy away as people don't mind paying £10 a month for a huge library compared with £10 for one album.
They won't lose football. No one broadcaster is allowed exclusive Premier league rights anymore so Sky will always have games.
