Why did Foreman find turning Frazier into mincemeat so easy?

Aren't we selling George a little short here?

It seems to me like some opinions on Joe vs Frazier state that: a) George was just a terrible physical and stylistic matchup for Joe; and/or b) Joe was careless/shot/drained/pastprime/partied etc.

Else; a) and b) are the factors explaining the outcome in Kingston. Taking both reasons away, George's boxing superiority is not that clear and his chances of victory diminish dramatically

OK. I agree that Joe was taylor made for George's style and, evenmore, that the Kingston version of Joe was not the best one... however, I think that George is more than just a lucky guy who happened to face an out-of-shape-made-to-order opponent. George brought to the ring something more that just physical and style advantages.

Thus, I agree that a prime/focused/cautious Joe, George would have had a tougher time and not a 100% sure victory. But I think that still he would have been able to defeat Joe.

    Boxing is styles and matchups

One other factor that needs to be remembered is that Foreman was an expert in punching downwards according to his own admission ... So his power would be even greater against the shorter Frazier

Frazier’s crouching, come forward style was perfect for Foreman. In a fight between two hitters, if they are both coming forward, the bigger, stronger man has the advantage. Frazier was ripe for the uppercuts, which Foreman executed better than Ali.

Foreman was a bad matchup for Frazier and he is also one of the most destructive forces the Heavyweight division has ever seen.

Nightmare style matchup, but just as important, Joe couldn't dent Foreman at all.
Joe landed a few hooks and George didn't change expression. George just walked right through him.

Joe actually temporarily stunned Foreman with a left hook in the first fight, which is when Foreman started his shoving tactics. He also visibly stunned him a few times in the 2nd fight, and hurt Foreman once by his own admission.

That being said, I agree this is a nightmare style matchup even prime for prime which favors Foreman. I think Frazier does much better this time around though. Even moreso, if the ref doesn't allow Foreman to shove Frazier in his kill-range at will.

Frazier left everything he had in the ring against Ali on March 8, 1971 in the FOTC. He put himself and his body thru hell during the training. Joe was not going to be denied that night. You would have had to kill him to beat him. Frazier got himself into PEAK condition physically and mentally...and was never able to get himself that peak again! After beating Ali that night...there was nowhere to go but down! The biggest fight in my lifetime...

Joe liked to duck, George liked to uppercut. George did not need many uppercuts.

    1) Styles
    2) Joe past peak and with his style he needed to be at his very best to have a chance
    3) The ref was brutal

George was really just outside Frazier’s learning curve, he lost his comfort zone the moment he realised he was never going to be on the front foot so George battered him and put on a matadors showing. Joe simply wasn’t ring savy enough to adapt a similar fate befell Foreman in Zaire.
