This might be an absolutely ridiculous post so I apologise in advance if it is... Seems really strange how many ingle fighters have had facial fractures over the last couple of years, injuries happen in boxing but coincidence for so many who have trained there to have had similar injuries (I know BJS left) Any link to PEDs weakening bone structure?
The thing is though...everyone is on PEDs at the top of the sport So i cant see how that is the cause. It is a coincidence. Unless they do loads of hard sparring in that gym
In all seriousness, it might be the hands down open style that leads to fewer punches getting blocked. For every handful of shots that are missed, some get through, and if it's a big one, then it's connecting and not being blocked with the arms/gloves. So there could be something in this theory.
I think the gym is famed for avoiding alot of hard sparring. They do a lot of body and technical sparring I believe.
Good points in this thread as to what causes these orbital bone injuries i) a hands down style ii) PEDs do weaken tendons and bones over a long period.I speak from personal experience. iii) BJS has been relatively inactive...he isn't quite used to taking punches in sparring .
In the 80s/90s there were a series of British heavyweights suffering career ending/threatening injuries to the retina - Bruno, Mason, Notice off the top of my head, but there may have been one or two more. At the time there was speculation that there was a link between the increased muscle mass of modern heavyweights, and susceptibility to eye injuries. Bruno, Mason and Notice were all from the Lawless camp, and again that fuelled whispers of some kind of connection. As it transpired, it was probably just one of those coincidences that happens. Probably same thing here. Whatever the Ingle camp is doing, it surely can’t be that dramatically different to what others are doing without their facial bone structure falling apart. Bearing in mind that these guys get punched in the face for a living, it’s not as if injuries to the face are out of left field.
It's a very broad statement to say PEDs weaken bones as there are different types of PEDs - Androgen, growth hormones, SARMS, SERMS, peptides etc, and they all work in different ways. Is it possible? Potentially of someone was to take a non-aromatising steroid for a very long time. Lack of estrogen can cause osteoporosis. However, this would take many, many years and is highly unlikely. Having low testosterone could also cause this. Some anabolic steroids can increase collagen production, which strengthen tendons and ligaments. All in all, I'd say there zero link. Huge uppercuts will do that damage regardless of PED usage.
