Anyone else think it looked too easy for Canelo?

The are challenges out there for him at 168 pounds. If Plant is next it’s not a guaranteed win because Plant is very good much better than BJS. Plant is faster, stronger, punches harder, more athletic and skillful than BJS. Then there is David Benaivides who may be the biggest threat at 168 pounds. The middleweight champions like Lil G, Charlo and Andrade all want to move up to fight him as well as Chris Eubank Jr. Erroll Spence Jr will be moving by next year and a super fight between him and Canelo is bound to occur. So lots of business and bigger fights to happen at SMW. The 175 rusk is fighting men who as so much naturally larger and bigger.

The problem Canelo has is there really isn't anyone Elite/HOF worthy that he can really aim for as a measuring stick around 160 and 168.

Look back at Ward, who had Kessler, then Froch, the Dawson and then moved up and at least faced Kovalev in his near-prime (even if the wins were controversial).

Canelo doesn't really have anyone proven at 160/168 other than GGG - and although he was elite, there is a big question as to whether GGG is still elite at 39 such that the risk to reward there for Canelo is low (damned if he does, damned if he doesn't).

Saunders had the potential to become elite but he wasted it by not being a dedicated pro and applying himself more.

Benavides MIGHT prove to be elite, but too early to say, and suspect that he will be 175 from now on anyway after failing to make 168.

Plant really did not impress in his win over Traux, and I don't think he has enough pop to get Canelo's respect - is Plant elite/future HOF?

Funnily enough, I think that Canelo needs Beterbiev/Bivol to really cement his legacy - but those two also have stagnated in recent years and facing Canelo would do wonders for their own legacy if they were to win (or even be like GGG and be on the wrong side of a close decision)

NB, I'm not sold on the big Charlo against Canelo, think he'd lose, and whilst Spence is elite at 147, he would lose all of his main advantages against Canelo at 160 - look at the difference in GGG vs Brook, vs Spence vs Brook.

Slim pickings for Alvarez i'm afraid!

To be fair, I do think that BJS has some of the tools required to beat Canelo and other similar fighters, it's just that like many others have said previously, Billy was too fearful of Canelo's counters. It's one thing to be cautious, that's important, but its another thing entirely to be afraid.

I'll be honest, the lack of punctuation made your comment difficult to decipher.

Interesting discussion but I think Canelo has a solid resume. All he needs to do is continue to fight the best of his era which is what he is doing. I have said for a long time in order to beat him you need to be able to do what Floyd did to him and only Spence has the skill sets to do it.

I don't see him bothering with someone like Eubank jnr for starters?

What has Eubank done to earn it?

Take his last name away and judge him on his resume and he's not proven himself at all.

Aside from beating a broken James DeGale, the only times he's stepped up against quality opposition he's lost.

Spence won't be big enough, in my opinion, if he moves up at all.

Besides, are you saying Spence is stepping up to 168?

It would be 160, wouldn't it?

Personally, I don't see Canelo going back to 160 - he'll make any legit 160lbs guys move up.

So, if Spence can't/won't move to 168, and Canelo is unlikely to go back down to 160, how does it happen?

Obviously, I'm assuming a lot, but there is some logic to it...no?

I will concede, however, that in all reality, the really elite guys at 175 are probably just that bit too big...even for someone like Canelo, who seems to be very strong and robust for someone his size.

It's possibly a bridge too far, no?

Still, if he announced he was facing one of those guys I think even his biggest haters might have a grudging respect.

I think Canelo has a SOLID resume, and the 2 fights against GGG proved to me that BOTH of those fighters are top drawer fighters.

But IMO, Canelo has to do a bit more to offset things that cast shadows of doubt on his achievements
    1) Dubious / controversial judging and scorecards.
    2) A-side diva like stuff such as rehydration clauses, catch-weights, short training camps etc
    3) Picking opponents when it suits him and not when they are prime (GGG, Kovalev)

Contrast to Uysk's run at Cruiserweight - not a shadow of a doubt, he picked up his passport and travelled into the lions den on every one. Now Usyk has stalled at Heavyweight due to a combination of injury, covid and Fury/Joshua crap, but that's what makes a fighter great to me.

And just to be clear there are past HOF/ATGs that get minus points from me on certain things:-
    1) Andre Ward - mostly fought in Oakland in the Super Six, never left the US. All things stacked in his favour always.
    2) Joe Calzaghe - his resume does not reflect how great he really was IMO - he should have left the UK earlier and aimed for marquee names in the US much earlier, and he could have easily been much better regarded legacy wise than he is now.
    3) Sven Ottke - never left Germany and some horrendous home-cooking (Robin Reid, Charles Brewer) - not that I would say Ottke is HOF anyway, but the point stands, his 20 defenses is a suspect achievement.

Spence will fight Canelo at 168 pounds in my opinion. As for Eubank Jr if he wins a world title at 160 pounds which I believe he will then he becomes viable as a Canelo opponent especially if Canelo wants to have a stadium fight in the UK in 2022 or 2023.

Now to give credit where it is due let’s not forget that James DeGale was the reigning 2 time world champion and current WBC Super Middleweight World when his fight with Eubank was made. Specifically DeGale gave up the belt to take the lucrative Eubank Jr fight so whatever anyone says Eubank defeated a current WBC Super Middleweight champion he just did not receive the belt for the win because it was not on the line. Also no one had broken DeGale the way Eubank did not even my guys Badou Jack and George Groves.

The haters will continue to hate Canelo irrespective that’s just the way it is even though he is hardly a polarising personality.

Canelo is a weird one because, if you were a big fan, you could really blow him up, talk about him moving through weight classes, doing this, that, the other.

Equally, those who don't like him can say he didn't dare face the Kovalev of a few years back, who is Rocky Fielding, GGG beat him...twice, in some eyes etc...

Do you know what i mean?

    Personally, I'm impartial.

I think he is a great fighter, and is definitely one of the best around at the moment...but, there are those caveats i mentioned.

You really think Spence will move up to 168?

Let's hope he faces Crawford before thinking about anything like that.

We've need to see that fight, don't you agree?

Let's hope politics and ego can be put aside and it can be made.

Well Crawford needs to accept the terms offered otherwise after winning the WBA title Erroll will be moving up. Erroll and Canelo respect each other.

Yup, completely know what you mean, I'm pretty impartial as well, just want to see the best fight the best , with minimum deck-stacking.

"definitely one of the best around at the moment"

Is actually one of Canelo's biggest issues, as around his weight class, GGG and 175 aside, there are not many even B/B+ talents around that can really test him - maybe Charlo, maybe Benavides. Plant isn't proven even B+ to me yet after his poor showing against Traux, so not really sure where Canelo gets his real plaudits short of Bivol,Beterbiev and a 3rd time with GGG (but that has plenty of questions now that GGG is 39).
