Let's say instead of fighting Ken Norton, Quarry rematches Earnie Shavers. I thought that this would be a very winable rematch for Shavers. From watching Quarry's fight with Norton, he hit Ken with a lot of punches, but they lacked steam, and Norton wasn't known for his chin. Neither was Shavers, but I always thought Earnie would beat Quarry in a rematch, by tko on cuts in the middle rounds. Quarry really went down hill fast after losing to Frazier in 74. Your thought?
By 1975 Jerry Quarry was at the beginning stages of boxing regression. Sure he was stopped by Ken Norton on Marc 24 1975, he did connect with clean shots to Ken, but Ken has been stopped by Jose Luis Garcia in 1970, George Foreman in 1974, Earnie Shavers in 1979, and Gerry Cooney in 1981. Jerry though has stamina, where Shavers did not. Earnie could sure hit, that is a fact but if he did not take you out early, he would lose his power like Samson did when Delilah snipped his hair. This fight goes to round 5, Jerry stops Earnie like he did to Lorenzo Zanon. Again stamina matters in this encounter.
Earnie would be Victor Mature, who played Samson in this 1949 classic, Hedy Lamar would be played by Jerry, as Lamar played Delilah, Just joking, just responding to the comment my friend. Both good heavyweights. Lol.
Okay well if he never faces and beats Norton and goes on to lose to Quarry again then he is thought of even less
Shavers couldn't do much worse than the 1st fight. He had more experience. He probably would have much more respect for Jerry. When a guy knocks you out it takes something to get back in there with him. Its a hurdle. Quarry wasn't as good as he had been.
That's why I have a lot of respect for Frazier for stepping in the ring with Foreman again, after being brutally (T)KO'd the first time.
Quarry was completely shot by 1975. He was in horrible shape for the Norton, taking the fight on 2 weeks notice. Quarry looked terrible in his tune up fight with Joe Alexander (getting dropped) prior to the second Frazier fight. He came into the 2nd Frazier fight at what was a good weight for him, 197 1/2, yet Quarry had no muscle definition. He also seemed to have no pop on his punches. I reference this because I believe at this point Quarry's body was breaking down. By 1975 Shavers had improved over all, yet Shaver was still Shavers. If an opponent hung around long enough Earnie might still peter out. This might be a case where Quarry simply had Shavers number, like Frazier had Quarry's number.
