I'd say GGG was the better boxer based on his jab, defence and punch variation. I'm not knocking Calzaghe btw I'm a huge fan of his. Its difficult to compare because their style is so different and the flashy on your toes style is easier on the eye
I'd tend to agree. If I were giving advice to a regular joe that wanted to start boxing, on who to emulate between the two, it would be Golovkin for sure. GGG is just so well-rounded and his technique is spot on. Calzaghe is like a wild whirlwind that relies a lot on his natural athletic abilities and reflexes to get through his fights. He does a lot of things wrong but gets away with them because of his freak talents.
When boxing really started putting eyes on Calzaghe he was already approaching mid 30s.. his career was always stalling due to hand injuries & numerous fights falling through.. yet even then his displays against undefeated Kessler & Lacy in particular were masterful.. I know Lacy gets **** but people act like he couldn't box… You are talking about a former Olympian that won over 200 amateur fights for ffs.. a guy who'd just been the first to pumell Robin Reid into submission (Reid at the time should have been unified champion having been shafted in Germany..) Calzaghe broke him! In my opinion Lacy would have gone on to have a much better SMW career had that fight not happened.. the Kessler fight again was pure class, after a cagey first 4 Calzaghe pretty much walked it .. completely shut Kessler down, that same Kessler battered Froch years later , beating Froch at his own game.. i've never seen Froch backed up for 12 rounds , which is what Kessler did.. the Hopkins fight was forgettable b/c it was Hopkins at his spoiling worst & a Joe that was just cashing in by that point but he got the job done, wasn't pretty but it came to a point in that fight that Hopkins had to play act & prison rules the joint just to stay in the fight.. & that Hopkins still went on to do brilliant things still.. Calzaghe was a fast high output southpaw with a great chin, high IQ & brilliant footwork.. GGG is a great fighter too (he was shafted of his legacy) who probably does the fundamentals better than Joe but Calzaghe had more facets & intangibles to his game imo.. GGG is always GGG, he's so consistent whereas Calzaghe could look awful one fight & show sheer brilliance the next.. it came good for JC in the end, whereas GGG can never have that Clenelo farce righted unfortunately.
Calzaghe would embarress ggg at 168 and win pretty much every round Too fast Too elusive Too good I'm no ggg hater, but he would never beat calzaghe or Ward at 168 Froch or lesser would be more interesting
Prime. There is that word that gets used to suit agendas. Like saying what was Calzaghes best win when past his prime? Tell me the fighters he beat that were past their prime, detailing where they were that indicated they were past their prime. So for example was Bowe past his prime when he got the DQ win for the second time against Golota. Was G Johnson past his best when he beat Jones and Tarver Was Ward past his best when he rematched Kovalev Was Calzaghe past his best when he fought Lacy Do explain. I enjoy chuckling at your posts.
Why is there even a discussion about this ?? Calzaghe is obviously a level or two above GGG in terms of legacy (and talent)
