Ali’s only competitor for the Crown. The most dominant heavyweight of all time, in an era that - although not the Golden Age - included it’s fair share of greats. Max Bear. Max Schmeling. Ezzard Charles. Joe Walcot. Billy Conn. All fighters fought in their prime. All men who would have educated the string of opponents KO’d by Mike Tyson in his rise to the top. All conquered by the methodical, destructive fists of Joe Louis.
    He lacked Ali’s movement.
He lacked Ali’s chin. He lacked Ali’s size. He may have equalled Ali’s heart but he was rarely in THAT kind of fight, so it’s hard to tell. What he was was a hell of a fighter across two good eras, and when he finished there were few greats left to conquer; he had so cleared out his division that he left no notable prime fighter for his successor - Rocky Marciano - to fight to cement his legacy. THAT’s how dominant Louis was. A brilliant heavyweight eclipsed by only one.
Ask most experts who was the best “boxer-puncher” type of HW in history then Louis probably gets the nod. He is also generally regarded as having the most accurate & precise footwork of any HW. Along with Liston & Tyson, he is one of the 3 best precision power punchers ever. “A credit to his race………the human race.”

Happy Birthday to the heavyweight legend, Boxing Icon Joe Louis!

I have him tied for #1 all time with Muhammad Ali. I just can’t seem to rate one over the other any more. Louis was about as genuine of a legend as anyone ever could be. When the topic of boxing comes up he’s usually first on my mind

    Happy Birthday Champ!
One of my alltime favourite boxers. Not just an alltime great puncher, also a great technician. He was both and by today's standards with around 6 ft 2 in not too small for a heavyweight. One of the most complete heavyweight boxers ever, and awesome to watch. Even if he wasn't so convincing, then he was in the rematch (like against: Max Schmeling, Arturo Godoy, Buddy Baer, Billy Conn and Jersey Joe Walcott). Max Schmeling once stated: Joe Louis boxed as if he came from another planet.

For me one of the great appeals about Louis was that he carried himself every bit as a champion, quiet, classy and dignified.
He really was on a tightrope, trying to keep all sections of society happy. He had to navigate some pretty treacherous social waters, and he did so with grace.
    Amazing man.

Ali was slightly greater, he was slighlty more dominant, fought a slightly better competition, i don't know who has the bigger impact outside the ring so They are about even here, and H2H i would have to favor Ali to beat Joe by Decision.
But like Foreman said : Muhammad Ali is the Greatest man of all time who ever boxed, Joe Louis is the Greatest fighter of all time!"

    Belated Happy Birthday to Joe.

A true legend and one of the two greatest heavyweights of all time. I put Muhammad Ali at number one but I certainly don't have any issues with those who give that accolade to Louis.
