How do you think Rocky Marciano would perform in todays era of Heavyweights

Good to hear JT! Covid FINALLY seems to be slowing down in the state with all the vaccinations.

 

Great news Swag. I haven't kept up to date much because it's quiet here and i'm not reading much about it. Sounds like the vac is working which is great news mate.

 

So you saw what Charles, Louis, Walcott, Matthews, etc saw too? Not like those statements weren't made in the late 40s through the 50s of him too.

 

With all due respect to the other opinions, Rocky Marciano would do just fine. He had a stellar work ethic preparing for his fights, better conditioning which allowed him to absorb punishment as well as dishing it out. He had a very knowledgeable consistent corner of Charlie Goldman and Al Weill, unlike today's champions who change corners like they change their trousers. Rocky fought more often, not like today's who bark from far away, but fail to fight unless it is every election year, living off of one victory, blaming a pandemic. Marciano had moxie. Another thing he had was fire in his fight, no one in his era could douse those flames, no matter what, he behaved and conducted himself as a man and champion. Not like some type of Jethro Boudine wanna be giant. As previously mentioned, he would be just fine, he did not have to carry extra flab like today's heavyweights, he would not suffer from an enlarged heart or Diabetes when his fighting days were over.

 

I love Rocky. Love him. He was a great fighter, end of. Great stamina, courage, chin and subtle skills for which he doesn't get enough credit. He is the only undefeated heavyweight champion in history, and his record probably will never be topped in the division. That is uncanny all by itself. But if he were fighting today, I honestly believe he would be too small go undefeated in the heavyweight division. That is NOT a knock on him. And all it is, is my opinion, that's all.

 

And a great cruiserweight. Hell, he might even be a great heavyweight today. I just personally believe he would be too small to go undefeated in the glamour division.

 

He’d be hard pressed to get a rating. Sad but true. Regardless of heart, skill, work ethic, etc this simply is not the era of 192 lb heavyweights. While some may argue that the division of the past 20 years has lacked imagination and fighters of exceptional talent, these aren’t journeyman either. It’s not like we have 100 Mike Whites walking around. In addition to being mammoth in size, some of these men can move around quite well for their size, have good trainers, strong amateur backgrounds and can both punch and take a punch.

 

In opinion, when they fight living off of one victory at a time, not very interesting. I now pay attention to the smaller guys, they fight thru pandemic, if they bark, they bite. Not like the steroid crop of heavyweights. I am still not sold how anyone can naturally grow to gigantic proportions, just like the WWE superstars without the help of a needle. I am not blind.

 

That may be true and I agree with a lot of it. But regardless I see very few pre 1970s heavyweights even making a dent today. I know it sounds tiresome but these guys are too goddamn big. If you want to argue that heavyweights half a century or more ago were “ p4p” better than they are now, fine... but even being p4p better only takes you so far. Otherwise Ray Leonard would have stepped up and beaten Spinks for the LHW title

 

He’d be an excellent champion.
