He's number 13 on my list, coming in behind Walcott at 12 and after Patterson at 14.

If a bout with battling jim Johnson could be arranged than no doubt one with Langford can be arranged. The point is Johnson can't go around calling himself champion if he won't fight the best opponents. The title should be declared vacant.

Why on earth would he do that?

All that'd happen is two white guys would fight for it, and the winner would probably draw the colorline, and Johnson would lose all the benefits of being champion, which there were a lot of outside the ring in those days.

Johnson was the fighter not the promoter.
Which promoters were willing to , meet his price $30,000 for a title defence against either Jeannette,McVey or Langford? Only two verified offers .The McMahon Brothers offered Johnson $30,000 to defend against Jeannette in NY.
He accepted, the NY Boxing Commission threatened to withdraw the licence of any promoter who put the fight on.They then withdrew their offer. They tried again sometime later, same reaction.Johnson offered to fight exhibitions in NY for charity this too was refused.
Hugh D McIntosh put together a 2 fight title defence deal for Johnson to fight both Langford and McVey in Australia, he agreed to terms and signed to fight, then his court case came up and he jumped bail rather than be railroaded into prison.McIntosh withdrew the offer and put an article in the newspapers explaining the Ausrtralian public wanted no part of a title fight with a fugitive as one of the protagonists.

Why don't you do some research and get yourself up to speed with what actually took place before making these ill informed pronouncements?
All this is in Adam Pollack's marvellous 2 volume biography of Johnson ,accompanied with multiple verified sources. Highly recommended reading for anyone who really wants to know about Johnson and his times. If you think he avoided these challengers produce verified offers of $30,000 for him to defend his title against any of his three black contenders.

I have challenged Mendoza to do so for several years now ,he hasn't come up with one yet!

No i'm not lying - my great grandfather was Joseph Goldblum, who used the name Jewey Smith for boxing. Any questions, just ask me

I've got him around 10. There s a few things about Johnson s character That I'm not keen on, but as a fighter, coming along when he did and achieved what he did, I have respect for.
