It is a fighter's obligation to stay in shape and to fight at the top of his game. No excuses... otherwise retire. Today Lewis is reluctant to come back because there's a slew of heavyweights that would be extremely dangerous for him to fight. He's also lazy and probably pushing 290 lbs.

Sometimes fighters have night off, like Lewis against Rahman, but if they are able to reverse the game and come back in better shape then they are not shot or they does not need to retire. But in the case that they are not going to improve and the change is irreversible then this mean they are shot and they should retire ... as Lewis did.

Nah, not shot. Past his best but not shot.

The Tyson fight finally got him worldwide praise but I didn't even think it was one of his very best performances, you could see (and I did tell my boxing friends at the time) some things starting to slide like his stamina and movement. In fact I'd been arguing that since 2000 with my friends, but when you're winning easy it doesn't tend to get noticed so much...

I am a monster Lennox fan. Period.

But to be honest, I think most of ESB puts WAY TOO MUCH ****ING emphasis on that fight either way.

To me, it was the two best heavyweights on the planet going nuts on each other for 6 amazing rounds. Lennox once again proved he was the best since Ali and Vitali affirmed his status as a great heavyweight with the potential to be an ATG as well. But Vitali got hurt and it doesn't matter.

But most would disagree, but if Vitali KO's Peter and defends it with ko's 3-4 times and can get to 40-2 with the highest KO % in heavyweight history while only losing twice due to injury and never being knocked down while defending the heavyweight belt as the second oldest fighter ever, I would put him as an ATG.

Did the cut spontaneously happen before Lennox landed anything? Was it a lighning bolt from the sky?

No, it was clearly first caused by a punch, then made worse by repeated punches landing in the same place. So you could say it was either stopped by Lennox's accuracy and timing, or Vitali's weak defence, or both.

But luck? Nah. No luck was involved, except maybe Vitali being lucky the fight wasn't stopped earlier.

Lewis had mentioned retirement before. His woeful preparation against Rahman and his longer spells of inactivity between fights all suggested Lewis was losing his focus and hunger.

I also noticed that Lewis looked to have lost some hand speed against Tyson. While he was far from shot when he fought Vitali he was clearly a fighter who no longer had the desire anymore and who was begining to decline physically.

Lewis did the right thing by doing what so few champion ever do and retired when his head was no longer in the game and had begun to decline physically.

I agree. I definately saw signs of decline against Tyson. He wasn't the same, he had lost some speed and his conditioning was not the same. Lewis' best weight was around 243-246lbs but after the 2nd fight with Holyfield his weight began to creep up around the 250lbs or higher mark, with the one exception of the 2nd Rahman fight where he got himself back in condition.

I think the fight took a lot more out of Lewis than Vitlai, cuts asside.

Lewis knew old alpha lions seldom beat younger prime alpha lions.

    Really? You've been stalking me?

Isn't that kind of ironic - obsessing over me and posting about how you have been watching me and think I'm posting about something too much?

I'd rather post about a boxing match than another poster, and I'd rather be accused of having too much to say about a particular fight than stalking another man over the internet. That's creepy. :scaredas:

Why in the world would it NOT be the case? Or at least be a major contributor? Inactivity and old age are not a good mix for anyone.

Shot is the absolute end of a fighter. I would say he was just way past his prime, but not yet shot.

:huh Why do you call it lucky? Was it not started by punches?

If anyone was lucky, it was Vitali, that the fight was stopped when it was. Another round or two and big country's blind in that eye.
