I don't think it's anti-Scottish, more that there's always been a bit of "selective nationality" going on - mostly media driven. And it's not really just Scotland / Scottish, applies to past champs like Calzaghe and Cleverly too.

Perception has been that a lot of the time when an Englishman does great stuff, they are English, and it's great for England, but when a Scotsman, Welshman or Northern Irish fella does summat great, it's a great British achievement. There was a lot of that I felt back with Andy Murray. But I think that's a media thing and not the average person deffo.

To be fair, the Scottish media historically tends to 'de-hype' our teams and stars; it's mostly doom and gloom perenial failure, and there maybe some of that in why Taylor hasn't got more exposure.

But maybe, just maybe that's not as bad as being a media darling too early and falling from a great height due to too much pressure and expectation (e.g. Khan maybe?, Joshua / Ruiz I)

I think Taylor's career has been managed pretty spot on up to now - maybe the lack of recognition is more to do with the fact he has achieved far more in 18 pro fights than is normal.

Calling someone an orange ******* in Scotland means they are an orange order protestant who likely supports rangers. Not sure it could be considered racism, probably more bigotry.
Unless Taylor was referring to the fake tan the guy was wearing but i am still not sure if there is racist element in saying that to someone.

Andy Murray became massive because the British public had been waiting for decades for a genuinely brilliant tennis star who could win Wimbledon. Everyone in the UK jumped on the Murray bandwagon because he was the only realistic hope of winning it. There is quite a few boxing stars from the UK these days and Britain has 2 heavyweight stars in fury and Joshua and we all know how much the general public get excited by the heavyweight scene compared with other weight divisions.

Not sure but its not just a case of catholic v protestant. The orange order are a more hard-line protestant group who don't like catholics but the vast majority of scottish protestants have nothing to do with orange order and many don't like them. Calling someone an orange ******* in Scotland is usually used in a football context, with rangers fans often being full of orange order members and josh being a hibs fan I can only guess it was something to do with that.
Either that or he was just referring to the guy wearing too much fake tan.
I doubt there was any racism involved in the situation but I think josh admitted to the charge so he would get a deal from the judge and would get away with the drug charge. Pretty sure he was carrying coke on him.

:facepalm::facepalm: Rougarou wearing sunglasses at the pre-fight press conference is the same as Taylor wearing them after the fight to cover his wounds

I run into a lot of this level of idiocy

racially abusing the doorman didn't help and his general persona would put people off.

Taylor moseyed on over to the lion's den of JCR's backyard like a prime Clint circa 64-66 and not only had to fight him but he had to fight the home ref, the three home judges, and 2000 vociferous and hostile JCR fans and he slayed them all before sauntering off with yet another undefeated fighter's zero (his 5th in a row and 6th in total from just 18 fights), all four belts and a place in the P4P

Put that in your pipe and smoke it

Well Murray is a slightly different case. Wimbledon is practically wall to wall coverage every year on the BBC. Any British tennis player that did well was going to get hyped. The middle class were desperate for a tennis champion they could route for. See Tim Henman ("Henman Hill" etc. etc.), a solid player, but his career achievements were eclipsed by Andy.

But I agree that Taylor's geographical birthplace is working against him on this one.

Khan gained a massive following after winning silver in the Olympics when he was 17. His profile was already massive before he even had a pro fight (much like AJ).

Josh Taylor has done it the hard way, he started out boxing as a complete unknown and has had to gain his following along the way. His career has been exceptional up until now. I think the heavyweight scene in Britain has not helped Taylor to get exposure. He headlined a ppv but most fans that bought it, did so to see the Chisora fight. Britain is blessed with all of the heavyweight belts and a lot of top contenders which is where most of the attention from casual fans goes.
