You've misunderstood, mate. He wasn't seen as world level anymore going into the Barkley fight. Since being annihilated by Hearns, he'd lost to Sims, should've lost to Lamas and was fat, out of shape and old. The interest in the Barkley fight came from the bad blood between them and Duran's former superstardom. He was viewed in a very different light than how Pacquiao was.

I'm guessing he means that by then it was a bigger upset becuase Duran was not seen as Prime anymore. Duran had suffered multiple losses between when he was seen to be in his Prime (SRL 1) and when he fought Barkley. Though Pacquiao had multiple losses between them too but unlike Duran, Pacquiao also had some big wins leading up to Thurman like vs Matthysse and even vs Broner that showed that Pacquiao was looking better than ever, whereas Duran was looking more lackluster and faded going into Barkley than Pacquiao was going into Thurman. So I think that's what he means. Not that he wasn't world level but in the sense that he was seen as his best days were behind him, whereas Pacquiao he didn't seem faded at all leading up to Thurman. Pacquiao did seem faded between 2014-2017, but then sort of surprised everyone in how he turned back the clocks vs Matthysse and Broner, so by the time he fought Thurman it wasn't as big of an upset as Duran was because people thought he was pretty much done and Barkley was looking like a beast when he KO'd Tommy.

For sure. Nor do I think even if Pac beats Spence should Pac be rated ahead of Duran
That ship has sailed since Pac lost to FMJ.
    Also I'm a huge Duran-nuthugger. LOL.

But generally speaking, the prime age of a boxer decreases with weight class.
So I weigh Pac's win over Thurman way higher than Duran's, again both because of Pac pushing 41 at the time and it being at 2 weight classes lower. Pac's KD and almost KO of Thurman was also impressive. He didn't fight "old" like how BHop or Ali did late in their careers.
And to assert this point, Pac is actually the 4th oldest boxing champion in history. With Hopkins (49, LHW), Foreman (45, HW) and Malinga (41, 11mo SMW) just above him.
It's absolutely crazy for a WW to place 4th. Or 3rd and even older if (when) he beats Spence.

i think what they both did, is absolutely amazing stuff. super hero type stuff. took falls, didnt let those falls be their story, got up and did some historic stuff, to become giants among men.

See the problem with this argument is there are a lot of oversimplifications.

    1. "More or less lightweights" is absurd. Firstly Pac started at light flyweight. Duran at SFW . Pac's career defining fights with his "Fab 4" happened at SFW. Duran's at WW, SWW and MW. They're at least 2 weight classes apart, arguably 4.

    2. About 3 yrs difference in age is also a huge oversimplification. It's mostly agreed that the prime of a boxer happens at 28-35. Assuming both Duran and Pac are phenoms that extended their absolute prime at 35, that made Duran only 2+ years removed from prime. Pac on the other hand was almost 6 yrs away from his prime years. Any athlete who's past his prime, let alone a boxer, would understand the significance of 2+ and 5+ past prime. It's not a linear comparison. Hard to understand unless you've been an athlete all your life and started to feel the effects of old age.

    3. Duran vs Barkley happened at MW. The oldest MW champion is BHop at 49. Pac vs Thurman happened at WW where the oldest WW champion is Pac at 41. There's a reason for this 8 year gap in just 2 weight class difference. It's more difficult to be old and be a champion at the lower weight classes (for what I thought was obvious reasons for boxing aficionados). It's also not a linear comparison. Even if Duran won over Barkley when he was at 41 as well, all things being equal, Pac winning it at WW is still much much more impressive. There is a reason why nobody called out Canelo for fighting an old bum in GGG when he fought him at MW when the latter was 36+.

I rate Iran as a better quality opponent slightly, but that's really all that I can give to my man Duran.

Good analysis. Spence will have to be careful with Pacuiao's lighting attacks in early rounds. Don't be careless otherwise Spence will find himself lying on the floor like Thurman.

Duran was 37 and 8 months when he beat Barkley. Pacquiao was older when he beat Thurman and had been a pro longer than Duran was at the time he beat Barkley, but it's important to point out that Duran had a lot more fights than Pacquiao. Also Duran had several matches that went more than 12 rounds since he fought much of his career in the 15 round era. So Duran had been more active than Pacquiao throughout his career and had more fights, so that's more wear and tear on the body. Duran was more visibly slowed down and past his prime when he fought Barkley than Pacquiao was when he fought Thurman.
FYI The Oldest MW Champion isn't BHop at 49 since BHop was Light Heavyweight Champ at 49 when he lost to Kovalev. BHop hadn't been Middleweight Champ since losing his titles to Jermain Taylor when he was 40 years old. I can tell you're trying really hard to argue that Pac being WW Champ at 41 is Greater and harder to do at WW than at higher weights, and you may be right, But you're "there's a reason for tis 8 year gap in just 2 weight classes" is not actually factual since Pac is an older WW Champ than BHop was at MW lol.

Now your argument that it's harder to win a world title at advanced ages at lower weight classes is a reasonable argument, I think we need to check the stats on this and look at the oldest world title holders in each weight class to see if the data supports your argument, but regardless I think that's a fair argument, that it's harder to do at lower weights because at lower weights younger fighters have faster hands, faster feet, etc and aging slows you down. So I get your argument, but I don't think it necesarily translates to what Duran did at MW or proves that what Pacquiao did is greater.

What I will say is that it's remarkable to the extent that Pacquiao has maintained his speed and overall work rate into his 40s in a way that other fighters haven't. Like Pac hasn't had to change the way he fights really, like other fighters had to do when they got older and started to slow down. Pac is still almost as fast as he ever was into his 40s which is crazy. But I think what this shows is that age is just a number and every fighter's prime is different and how long a fighter can extent his prime depends on the fighter and I think as a lot to do with their work ethic and how dedicated they are in the gym.

Nobody called out Canelo? LMAO you must have been living under a rock. Age has been used as an excuse for GGG by his fans ever since GGG failed to deliver on the promises his fans made as to what he would do to Canelo if he ever fought. GGG was much younger than Pac was when he beat Mattyssee, Broner, Thurman when he fought Canelo. GGG was much younger when he fought Canelo than Duran was when he beat Barkley, a Duran who had much more wear and tear on him than GGG did, who had nearly 3 times as many fights as GGG in his career, and who fought a much tougher level of competition throughout his career. And to your points, GGG was fighting at a higher weight, so it should have been easier for him to maintain his prime in his mid 30s than Pac two weight classes below into his 40s. And of course GGG was much younger than Hopkins who had all kinds of success in his late 30s and 40s between Middleweight and Light Heavyweight. So again these examples make the excuses that GGG fans were making about how GGG was so old only in his mid 30s vs Canelo absolutely laughable given the success and longevity that Duran, Pac and Hopkins had at much older ages who each had much longer and more grueling careers than GGG did.

I hope pac can take enough out of Spences tank in the first half of the fight, because if pac tires down the stretch like he did against Thurman, Spence could do some serious damage.

How does pac typically look against southpaws, anyone? I can’t remember the last time he fought one.

Duran was a natural LW, Pac was a natural FW. Pac was at FW what Duran was at LW, his absolute peak, physically (not in terms of skills). Pac just spent so much time at WW he became a natural LW, in terms of fight night weight (LWs weigh the same as a WW Pac in fight night).

To put into perspective how much better Pac was at FW vs WW or even LW - Pac was going to war for 12 rounds and wasn't even tired. So he had much more stamina. He was also a lot faster. Most importantly, his power was still devastating. Keep in mind that JMM, MAB, Morales are iron chinned fighters who happen to be ATGs. Dropping them would be equivalent to dropping Dela Hoya at WW. That's the power difference, Pac had enough power to stop ATG chins at FW, he doesn't have that at WW, and looking at the Diaz fight, not sure he had it there either. If you look at Pac-Ledwaba, the absolute shock in power that Ledwaba experienced, it was different.

People forget that LW was supposed to already be too big for Pac, he was suppose to max out there, only ODLH dragged him up to WW.

HW hit harder, PERIOD. More mass, more force, more DAMAGE. It's simple physics. What BS logic you have. That's the reason we have divisions. None of the guys you mentioned would last a few rounds in the HW division. The heavies would laugh at their supposed power.
