I'm an old guy and an old boxing fan. And I've often bet on Heavyweight fights, rarely on lighter weight contests. "There can only be one" was the cry of a television show about immortals. And so it is with boxing: "There can only be one." That one right now is Tyson Fury. I say dump any belt you need to, to get a fight with him. Fury's the Prize and it usually serves you well to keep your eye on the prize, in any worthwhile endeavor!
Duck season I could take if either Fury or Wilder had faced who AJ has,why is it AJ seems to face the better boxers, ask yourselfs this.
"mandatories are getting in the way of big money fights" Which fights are those? Whyte II or Ruiz III? Those might be a bit better (financially) than fighting Usyk, but that's it. I can't think of a 3rd fight that'd be significantly more lucrative (given Wilder and Fury are out of the question)
Fight fans are getting stuffed up,John Fury said Tyson should have faced AJ & dropped his WBC belt & fight AJ.
I see it slightly differently. Usyk was likely trying to get the title shot in before the undisputed fight, as it was pretty obvious Joshua/Fury would drop the WBO belt (or be stripped) after becoming undisputed due to the inevitable rematch clauses; devaluing the belt. This would mean Usyk would fight Joyce for the WBO. Fine. So he becomes WBO champion. But then what? He would be locked into a devalued backwater organization which was discarded by the undisputed champ. He would be largely ignored and it would hurt his legacy (see Terrance Crawford). So that would leave Usyk with a dilemma: Does he drop the WBO belt himself and try to get into position with the IBF, WBC and WBA., or not? And how long would that take? He isn't getting any younger. So it made sense from both a financial perspective and a legacy perspective to try to force the mandatory fight through before undisputed. I might have more sympathy, if Joshua wasn't the least active unified Heavyweight Champion of the last 50 years. If he is having trouble fulfilling his mandatories, maybe he should have fought more frequently than once every 6 to 9 months, and this was before Covid-19 hit. Thumbs up for the over the top Highlander analogy. "It's better to burn out, than to fade away!"
I am not getting what other "big" fight is out there other than Fury or Wilder, who are facing each other. Ruiz? anyway, I can see Joshua dropping the WBO belt, but he'll keep the other two.
OK, maybe not 3 rounds but he’s getting knocked out. (Triangle theories with Pulev and Takam mean nothing in reality). I don’t give Usyk much chance against any of the “big 3” HWs on what I have seen from him so far at HW.
The most protected HW in the past 2 decades. Always going after the weak and old, rematch clauses, home field advantage.
i would have given that advise to fury a long time ago. whats he doing having trilogies with the 4th best hw in the division? im an old guy too, by the way.
