1992 Riddick Bowe vs 1919 Jack Dempsey

Finally someone said it, Dempsey fought over 100 years ago ffs. The guy wasn’t even a heavyweight and is not impressive to anybody watching objectively and not with pure nostalgia. He was a good fighter in his time, but the idea that he is competitive against the all time greats who would have at least 30 pounds on him is ridiculous. Bowe would smash him to absolute pieces

According to "experts" it took us millions of years to evolve enough as humans to build our first city. But in the last 100 years we've evolved from human beings into super-humans? I've been around almost 100 years and I just don't see that. Maybe I wasn't paying close attention?

 

I can't believe Jack was champion when you were born can I ask you what the first big fight you saw was?

 

The first big fight I actually saw was Joe Louis vs. Jersey Joe Walcott, with the Lineal World Heavyweight Championship on the line. The war delayed my live viewing activities. I'd seen fights live before the war, but I wouldn't call any of them big fights.

You really do not know that there is zero in fight footage of Greb, that what we have he is just fooling around with an older guy?

 

Willard was not 39, he was 37 when he fought Dempsey in 1919.
Also he was almost completely inactive, extremely few rounds, since he won the HW title from Johnson in 1915.
He was also softer than when he won the title.

I believe he had fewer skills than Bowe. Willard mainly had the size, jab, & when he was fit, excellent endurance.
Bowe had a fuller set of skills, including unusually good infighting for a big man.

 

Willard was vulnerable to leap in lead hooks (johnson) or countering the jab to get in((dempsey) and he can be roughed up on the inside. But trying to straight away jab him lead to you eating jabs , he was pretty decent at that. I dont see Bowe beating Willard , with what he offers

 

Bowe had no trouble getting in, he was a great infighter.
At his brief best he was superb.
Boxing has, in general, gotten better over 100 + years!
Willard did not face as good competition.

At his absolute peak, when he won the title, he was behind after 20 rounds against a past peak Johnson.
He only won due to Johnson not being in as good condition & wilting in the heat.
Willard had some skills, but his size was unusual then, not now...

It is unusual to see him better than Bowe, we disagree.
But if Bowe only won at his absolute peak because a guy who was well ahead faded over the distance (without even having a style disadvantage)...
We would properly think he is overrated.

 

boxing has not gotten better over the years this is wrong and film shows this . I do not think a guy being behind the most skilled heavy on film is overrated , all this stuff is contextual. Willard had better fundamentals than Bowe any day of the work and thats what shines in these matches. High guard and form on your punches are not fundamentals. Controlling distance, intiiative and keeping safe after you attack are the core elements and Willard was better than Bowe was at that.

 

Ridiculous match-up. . Dempsey had the old time style and stance. Hands low , no jab.

Bowe will blast hellfire on Jack before he even gets within punching range.
By 4 rounds the features on his face will be rearranged beyond recognition.

It's an honor that someone with these moronic views doesn't think highly of me. You're nothing but an old fossil still living in the past, when Dempsey was as good as it got. Sorry to burst your bubble, but while Dempsey was good in his time, their have been countless boxers, bigger, stronger, faster, better, more powerful, more skilled, etc who have come on to the scene who he doesn't hold a candle to.
