Reminds me of Canelo when he was younger, you could tell he was super talented, but always had big lulls in action.

he lacks canelos power and grit. he is also predictable, its just that hes so fast and so defensive, that its hard to time him. a guy with power and speed wouldnt need to time him, just keep throwing.

He’s got a good reach. I think he can go very far and tame guys like Tank if he keeps relying on that reach and speed.

He’ll need to improve his footwork, rely on it more to always stay in his range and as soon as the other guy gets close, tie them up. Basically. As he lacks the power and maybe the chin and recovery, he can’t get into fireworks. He needs to keep the fight boring and outbox them for 12 rounds.

Im not sure how he could keep someone like Loma off him though. Loma has too much foot speed and a master of positioning, he will get in range and pepper him.

his skills are excellent. and you can be successful at top level with no power. or no chin. but not with both.

Does he drain himself a lot for fights? He looked big there, wonder if he's carry more power if he went up a division.

Fantastic jab, good boxer but I'm not sure how Linares let him off. Ive rarely seen a boxer have his opponent so wobbly and be happy for him to tie up and just stand there. If it was any one of the younger guys at that point instead of Linares he would have been finished.

This is my opinion too. I think he’s very drained. Not sure if his power will carry up.

but his stamina will definitely improve.

Don't be too harsh on Haney. Yeah, he was hurt badly by Linares. Yeah, he held for dear life in the 12th. Yeah, he ran and held like a ***** and it wasn't pretty. Yeah, his recovery ability isn't great either. Joshua-esque. Yeah, his power is apparently not very good at 135. But he's young. And he CLEARLY has the skills and talent. If we just talk about boxing skills he's without a doubt a Top 3 P4P talent of the sports right now. The big difference to guys like Garcia or Lopez is the power. While Garcia and Lopez both are inferior if it comes to pure boxing skills they're having a huge equalizer: Power. Haney hasn't. He touched Linares all night long and Linares wasn't even blinking. Haney has to work on that power. The good thing is: He's strong. He hold himself in the clinch and was really roughing Linares up there at times. So it's not a general weakness or something. He's young and can do that. While i still think he would cause both Lopez and especially Garcia some problems Lopez might be too strong and powerful at this point which is no shame at all. Lopez could probably fight at 147. I'm still very high on Haney and his skillset. Right now i think Garcia is more his cup of tea and if he wants to fight one of these other young guys it should be Kingry.

I think he needs to pace himself a little better, and not over rely on his head movement for defense especially against quick combo punchers like linares

So what is It? What is the narrative we are going to agree on?

Because there seems to be changes to people's thinking with Haney depending on his performance and who he is fighting.

Some are over hyping him, overrating him and when he fails to deliver once again it's "yeah but he is young"

So what is? Is he young and needs more time or do we gauge him and rate him on his last two fights against aging fighters who have seen much better days?

They say you're only as good as your last fight, well Haneys last two haven't been exactly spectacular so can we judge him against Teo, Davis, Loma, Garcia, Commey and others based on those last two performances?

Because to me it seems people are judging him against that list of fighters on what he may do, his potential and what they hope he can do rather than what he is actually doing.

If he can accept that he’s not a power puncher, and adjust accordingly, he’ll be a fine fighter. Somehow, somewhere, he’s been convinced that he needs to KO guys. When he presses, not only is it not effective, it empties his gas tank, and leaves him open. Ironically, I think if he’d have fought more on the outside last night, and countered more, he’d have had a far greater chance of a KO, whilst also winning more decisively over the distance.

Linares is nearly 36 y/o, hadn't fought in 15 months, is way past his best and has been stopped five times, including by a way smaller natural 126 pounder who was making their debut at the weight, two of those stoppage losses coming in his last five fights

Gamboa was 39 y/o, shot beyond belief, was coming off a KO loss and a bad leg injury and should be 7-5 at 135, and has been dropped in like 10 or 11 separate fights

Haney who is way naturally bigger, younger and fresher than both was supposed to blast through the pair of the them like a knife through hot butter but he couldn't even wobble them

There appears to be a serious power outage in Haney Town

Haney didn't fail to deliver though. He looked fantastic and made what you'd call a rookie mistake, which to be honest ties in with the 'hes young and needs more time's comments. Truth is he will only learn by being in with good pros and might take an L because of it, that doesn't make him any less of a talent. He should have been taken out of there last night by Linares in the end but everything up until that point was fantastic. He made rookie mistakes in the championship rounds, like many young fighters do.
