Not a great puncher but probably hits just hard enough to keep the elite from going to town on him. Probably he's competitive with anyone although I'd make him the underdog against Lopez, Loma, Garcia, Davis.
Gamboa has been down in like ten separate fights and Linares has been stopped five times. He's much naturally bigger than both but he couldn't even wobble or hurt them despite hitting them with everything bar the kitchen sink, catching them clean and flush with plenty of full power shots and spending years training down at SNAC with Vic Conte.
This. 100%. All the people talking about Haneys non existent power and how he couldn't wobble a glass jawed (nonsense) Linares and Gamboa are just keyboard warriors who doesn't understand how boxing works. They might be boxing fans, but they have no clue about the sports. Saying Haney is featherfisted is just stupid. He's definitely not a big puncher and it isn't a weapon like Teo has for example but he can keep guys at bay if he hits them. I mean look at Linares....Haney landed some good shots early on when he was aggressive and Linares didn't really committ to his punches because he was clearly troubled by the speed and explosiveness. He was probably afraid of getting caught too clean so he started to committ to his punches late in the fight after he wobbled Haney and probably thought he was done (which he was). Before that i didn't see a very aggressive Linares walking through Haney.
linares was throwing the left hook bomb from the jump. he just couldn’t time or catch Haney With one shot. As Haney was jumping in & out of the pocket. it was when Haney tried to walk Linares down after the 6th. & started to trade in the pocket That allowed Linares to throw combinations & have more & more success as haney was “there” (in the pocket) to be hit. it’s not Haney’s “power” that kept Linares at bay. it was his speed & reflexes that allowed him to go unscathed for the majority of that fight.
A lot of not well known boxers too were/ are able to drop a guy even in amateur ranks. There is interesting pic on this wiki page, the guy is lanky 112 lber. Pic is worth to see. János Váradi - Wikipedia
That's in part because of their wildly different personalities. Chris Algeri doesn't talk about KO'ing this person, that person, and the next. Nor did his daddy sit in post-fight interviews talking how they are going to slap this guy around 'if they want the smoke'. Algieri is incredibly humble and knew his limits. He didn't flex and lie in interviews...
The difference is that Algerie is a likeable guy who doesn't carry on like an ass clown telling people he is the second coming of Floyd Mayweather.
Ummm, theres more to boxing than just power, he is still physically maturing, Shouldnt make much difference at his age, bigger guys can take more and give more also. He has to be managed carefully atm.
