You mean embarrass them by his lack of skill compared to modern welterweights and middleweights? Sugar Ray Robinson would of been a jobber if he fought in modern times kid.

All of them. Lol because Robinson wasn't that good of a puncher. I know you heard Bert Sugar say Robinson was a great puncher and you will believe whatever people tell you on TV. But Robinson wasn't that good. His opponents weren't that good. McClellan, Hearns, Julian Jackson ect would of destroyed Robinson within a few rounds.

    Boxing has evolved little kid.

Only in the mind of someone who doesn't know as much as
he thinks he does about boxing.

Actually, I've never heard Bert Sugar say that. In fact, for a long time I considered Robinson a light puncher. While I do view him as a light puncher compared to guys like Tony Zale, Marvin Hagler, and Julian Jackson, 109 KOs in 173 wins is not too bad. While anazlying Ray's fights against those fighters you mention would be another thing, cuz of styles, McClellan's only claim to fame are two victories over Jackson. And Jackson and Hearns were not known for their durability, unlike Ray.

Robinson was a great, great puncher. Questioning that is nothing short of embarrassing.

I was busy today and so have just gotten online to watch these fights. Glad to see you are back with your fight posts.

I guess I fall in the middle of the dispute on scoring here. I see it close through 7 with Robinson then taking over. From 11 on the rounds are routs. I would have it 8-3-1 going into the 13th.

My take is Sugar Ray was just great. LaMotta has been somewhat overrated since pumped up by that movie. I agree with your take, as I understand it, that Jake was not able to land enough punches to win rounds, but we should remember that they scored differently back then. Robinson gave up the ring by retreating during the first half of the fight with LaMotta more or less chasing him. Jake got dibs from some for aggression, and deservedly so. Once Ray began picking up the combinations, Jake was out of his depth.

Robinson was extremely effective when his opponent plodded into his jab and combinations as LaMotta did. Jake had no choice as he was a one-dimensional fighter. It will be interesting watching Ray if he meets an opponent who, for one has a better jab or at least an equal jab, or two can somehow neutralize the jab.

A lot of people on here could learn from Jason Thomas. He has a mind of his own, and is a very reasonable and thorough guy. And best of all, he will disagree with you, in a respectful manner. It doesn't get any better that that. You are an invaluable poster to the forum Jason Thomas.
