Originally believed to be an exhibition a`la yesterday's Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul (or, in keeping with the all-Mexican theme, Julio César Chávez vs. Jorge Arce), it turns out this is going to be a REAL bout and count on their records.

I'm livid.

These are two ATF's of mine, but JSK debuted in 2001 and fought in countless grueling wars over seventeen years and should have permanently hung up his gloves in 2018, if not earlier; MAB, otoh, made his own pro debut in 198-freaking-9, and was in even more wars than JSK, and retired thrice, most recently in 2011, and honestly should have called it quits at the absolute latest in 2007 (after Pacquiao II, with his last remotely decent performance being versus JMM several months prior). When this was believed to be an exhibition I was confident that El Renuente would take it easy on his legendary countryman, but with the fires of serious competition lit I'm worried he might be tempted into pounding on the naturally much smaller man (natural welter/light middle vs. natural super bantam) or that worse, by pulling his punches he will insult MAB's sense of machismo, causing a vicious retaliation and sparking a spiteful melee where somebody gets seriously hurt.

 

His last match, a mild upset over an unbeaten prospect who's like...your age , set new Compubox records I'm fairly certain.

Definitely check out both with Kamegai, essential viewing. His crowning achievement, stopping Berto, was pretty good. Watch him get robbed in Mike Jones I but not the boring rematch loss. Buendia (if you can find it) was fire. David Estrada, Carson Jones...really just throw a dart. He wasn't in many that weren't at least decent.

 

Oh for some reason I thought he was late teens or maybe like 20 when they fought. N/m then.

 

Gabe actually gave him a bit of beatdown, that was painful to watch me being a JSK fanboy.

Herrera fight was cool but would've been even better 5-6 years earlier, both were near their sell-by date at that point.

 

AFAIK yeah. It was originally supposed to be this Saturday but got postponed 'to July' but new date not announced yet that I know of.

 

Reiterating the point in my OP - what must be going on in JSK's head in the lead up for this fascinates me. I'm sure he worshipped MAB growing up, so would he rather err on the side of disrespectfully annihilating him, or potentially disrespecting him even worse by using kid gloves?
