I don't think he fought a significant fight against a southpaw. Then again, most natural southpaw's were converted into conventional fighters back in those days.
Makes it difficult to make a pick. Some guys do really well against southpaws and others are completely flummoxed. We don’t really have a way to know which Joe was, but given that he had so little experience with them I slightly favor Ortiz.
One thing that sticks out to me when I watch Ortiz is how painfully slow he is. I get that he has a size and power advantage but Joe is hands down the more talented fighter. Like every discussion involving a 1940's heavyweight vs a modern day heavyweight, it always comes down to how much a forum member values the size advantage of the current era vs the skill of the fighters of the past.
I hate to say it. But I have to favor Ortiz. While Walcott was leagues better in skills there are two hard facts that can’t be refuted: 1. Walcott isn’t cracking Ortiz’s chin 2. Walcott isn’t taking too many of Ortiz’s punches
Why? Walcott had very solid punch and he could catch you with something you couldn't see - these punches are the worst ones.

Ultimately Ortiz was a guy who had two important fights and got KOed in both. He's a guy with more failed drug tests than wins of any note. Stamina is Walcott's biggest weakness and I can't think of a guy much worse to try and exploit it than Ortiz.
