I think like most things boxing has evolved. The jab is used differently by many elite fighters. Guys don't just pop it out to set shots up or control distance like they used to. Lewis for example was accused all the time of pawing with the jab, Holmes said he had a terrible jab. But that's because Lewis' use of the jab and his lead hand was very different. He would extend it to maintain range and also shorten the distance he had to move his hand, therefore controlling his opponent. He would extend his jab to pull down an opponents guard or block their vision, he's use collar ties to control opponents, so all that pawing had a purpose. Basically it was the Kronk style of using the lead hand, you see similarities in Hearns and now in Fury on how the lead hand is used. Mayweather too was often accused of not jabbing enough even though he clearly had a superb jab and again that's because Mayweather had advanced beyond the need of the traditional jab to control range and his opponent. He didn't need to gauge range with a lead hand like lesser fighters so instead of using the jab to do this, used his lead hand to take away his opponent lead hand, so they couldn't gauge his range making him more elusive. He'd also use the jab to draw leads, to counter, so he wasn't throwing the jab just to set up a follow up right hand in the normal way, he'd miss on purpose make them lead and then pull counter with a right hand. Both used to set up a right hand but in different ways. So yeah many top guys may not jab like they used too in the old days and older fighters Holmes may criticise the next gen for not doing it like they did throwing constant jabs but that's because boxing as evolved, the game has changed and fighters have adapted.
He’s not known for a great jab, more overall punching ability. I’d say there’s absolutely loads that are known for their jab before Robinson’s is acknowledged
Floyd`s jab is nowhere as good as Ray`s was and stats wise he threw far less jabs too, Ray threw a lot of combo`s after setting them up with the jab while Floyd rarely did that, relying on throwing one or two shots at a time then running away, Lewis`s era was less skille than Larry`s and Holmes had a better jab than Lewis.
He constantly pumped the jab. Count the jabs in the second Basilio fight, constantly pumping it out there: This content is protected
