Who was the first fighter to drop Tommy Hearns and Mike McCallum?

That's what i thought. Must have been blatantly obvious from ringside.

 

He definitely was in the amateurs. McCallum was dropped and then stopped by Andres Aldama in the 1979 Pan American Games. I couldn't tell you if that was the only time he was knocked down in the unpaid ranks, however.

 

Yes there`s no way Benitez dropped Hearns.

 

Graham didn`t even come close to dropping McCallum, what round are you talking about?

 

The first fighter I see knocking down McCallum was Roy Jones, the first fighter I saw knocking down Hearns was Leonard when Tommy sagged down with the ropes proping him up, the first time I saw Tommy legitimately knocked Down was when Hagler flattened him in the third round at that epic war.

A knockdown doesn’t automatically call for a 10-8 round. There’s no rule that calls for it.

It might, if it’s of the flash variety, result in the fighter scoring the knockdown getting a 10-9 nod if the round is otherwise even or if the other fellow won otherwise it but didn’t do any major damage.

 

Boxrec straight up says that the judges didn't count it as knockdown. But maybe they misunderstood, and the judges only gave it 10-9 to Graham because of the resons to cite above.

That’s odd. Boxrec would have to have a source (or sources) with all three judges saying they independently overrode the ref’s call (they’re on three different sides of the ring so hard to conspire) to make that claim. I’d have to see it.

 

I think the most likely thing is that Boxrec took the 10-9 scores as indication that the judges didn't score the KD. But as you say they could score the KD and still have the round 10-9.

The first guy to legitimately drop Mike McCallum was Fabrice Tiozzo at light heavyweight. Trust me, daddy!

 

Yep, I think the Tiozzo KD was the first (and only?) proper knockdown of McCallum's career. I suppose Hearns got a standing 8 count against Leonard but he had no legs left and the ropes were holding him up so that's a KD as far as I'm concerned. The Benitez one was definitely a slip.
