I know but I`m just angry that Fury seems to think his fight with Wilder means as much the fight he was going to have with AJ.
To put it in perspective the purses for a level of fight between Froch and Bute in the current climate would be approximately 4/5 times what they got then. This is because competition has driven up prices and promoters are battling for the best fighters. Froch vs Bute would have purses of circa £2.5m combined in current climate. You have a promoter like matchroom that would say I’ll give you £500k each and Bute and Froch managers simply go to BT, ESPN, Showtime etc and say this is what they are paying. How much would you pay etc. And the price goes up. Matchroom pay rather than losing that fighter to a rival promoter. it’s the managers and competition driving prices. If we had one sole promoter and broadcaster. We then would find purses would reduce and we get more stacked cards like the UFC. At that point it’s then dependant on promoter and provider to keep costs down. UFC for instance decided to profit and make most solid cards PPV.
Will be interesting to see how many PPVs Sky manage to put on over the next 12 months without a stable. My guess is we see Josh Taylor as the new poster boy here for PPV. BT have certainly struggled to buy into any PPV business I wonder if they also try to get into the Tyson Fury business through Top Rank once hi BT deal is up
What you describe is my only bit of scepticism about DAZN uk. Just because there is more money in the ppt doesn't neccesarily mean better fights but it will mean boxers demand more money.
The only consideration for a PPV should be that it's all about the main event. There needs to be a fight that demands PPV. With Matchroom it has been the other way around, their scheduled PPV nights demand a fight. There shouldn't be any level of 'stackedness' that can compensate for breaking this rule. Get some talented youngsters on the undercard for exposure and that will do. Nobody is caring for the fights they are desperate to see.
This scenario all started with the 'Rule Brittania' Kell Brook vs Frankie Gavin card. It sold well with the stacked card so since then they have ran with we will stack a card with names against B+ level opposition and charge PPV. The casuals lapped it up so the have continually exploited it to the situation we have now with the likes of Whyte and Chisora only fighting puddings on PPV.
You think that this is better than A J vs Usyk? Yeah, Usyk is not british, therefore not a draw, from internet looks that Bellew vs Usyk had good sales for this and good tickets sales too. Usyk vs Chishora looks that probably had better sales than Whyte vs Povetkin. I don't know but this is from the same internet english language sources.
Think it hit the peak with Chisora vs Parker. Eddie had floated the idea of a PPV with no main event. Perfect for him, exactly what he's good at - getting creative and selling poor fights making the 'package' look good. Probably good timing him leaving Sky. Fingers crossed he won't be under the same pressure at DAZN to dream up pathetic PPV nights.
Joshua Whyte was a British Title Fight at the time it was built as a PPV as it was a "grudge match", the undercard however was very solid. I'm sure the Fury v Chisora 2 card was similar in quality at around the same time and it was just on boxnation, I don't think there was an additional PPV charge.
It wasn't Sky. The premier league was the one who made games ppv during the pandemic. Blame the clubs who asked for it.
