How high do you rate Honeyghans victory over Curry?

So Bezos is this how you got the money to start your company?!


If this was such a certainty, why did William Hills refuse to take money on a Curry win from my Dad?

 

Leonard took away Don's chance of ever fighting Hagler. He convinced Don to wait while that snake was negociating the fight for himself. You notice Leonard rarely visits Texas I wonder why lol

 

It doesn't mean any more than Shawn Porter beating Danny Garcia, or Thurman beating Porter and Garcia. Or Brook beating Porter but losing to Spence. Or Spence beating Brook and Porter.

Honeyghan beat Curry, Maurice Blocker and Bumphus, but lost to Breland and Starling. Starling beat Honeyghan and Breland, but lost to Curry and Blocker and Bumphus. Breland beat Honeyghan but lost to Starling. Curry beat Starling and lost to Honeyghan.

They were all basically solid welters who could (and did) lose to any of the other solid welters at any given time. They were no better than the solid welters who do the same now.

Just because some dolts back then put Curry on imaginary pound-for-pound lists doesn't change anything.

 

At the time, it was a major upset. As another poster has suggested, some bookmakers refused to even make a book on the fight - it was considered such a mismatch.

I'd agree with anyone, who thought that Curry had been prematurely idolized but, for the most part, he'd been living up to that hype.

Honeyghan fought a nigh-on perfect fight and shocked everyone. It was a brilliant performance that took the undisputed championship away from an excellent fighter.

No one said it was a certainty except you .I merely said in hindsight the signs were there in the Rodriguez fight.

William Hills and your dad wouldn't have known Curry was a mess but those close to him did.

 

I don’t think there’s any getting around the fact that it was a great win. Donald Curry was undefeated, in his twenties, and seen by many as p4p one of the best in the world. I do believe there is some merit to the argument that he was struggling mightily to keep his weight down, but to what degree that led to his defeat or even if the outcome might have been different otherwise, I do not know.

 

I remember the advice in Honeyghan’s corner when Starling was beating him up: “Make yourself scarce!”

Like, did they want him to leave the ringside area altogether or just hide behind the referee?

 

I think this was a tremendous win for Lloyd, but I also think he caught Curry at the right time. It happens. It happened to Ruben Olivares against Rafael Herrera, it happened to Fighting Harada against Lionel Rose and it happened to Ike Williams against Jimmy Carter. And like Curry, they never fought at that particular weight again. They simply outgrew the division. It shouldn't have been that much of a surprise to boxing insiders. Curry had already tested the waters a couple of times at junior middle, so they had to know he was eyeing up an abdication soon. But boxing offers little in the way of favors, so you grab what you can and Lloyd did just that. I will say, however, in the case of Olivares, Harada, Williams and Curry. Do I think they would have beaten their conquerors in their respective primes? Yes, I do.

 

I don't put much stake in it, because I don't look at such things the way we, the Media and often useless Stats get threw about today and since the 80s & 90s...

I read too much about bygone fighters, to both understand how Boxing Works and the way in which fighters "Enhanced their Reputation", got Rated and more importantly got Title Fights, or Not!

Honeyghan is another example of Top Capable Rated Fighters, who was Managed & Negotiated into place, rightfully or not and who made Good on His Chance & Title Shot.

It proves than Damn Near ANY Worthy Fighter Can and that Boxing rarely operates by any prescribed & set Rules and that Stats & Hype are often just that, Nonsense & Bull_hit!

 

Two things going on in this one. Curry emaciated and drained and Honeyghan way better than thought and putting forth a beautiful fight.

 

Of course it was a huge upset. Curry was pound for pound one of the best and Honeyghan unknown.

 

I remember at the time it was aired on TV it was huge! Now we know all the back stories back then we had to just rely on the magazines.

 

Lloyd would have beaten the Lone Star Cobra who sparked Milton McCrory the previous year in my opinion. Honeyghan's style was all wrong for Curry. The match would have gone on longer,though.

Lol and those change of tactics did for Lloyd in that fight.

He'd entered the ring a zombie but even deprived of his usual speed & zip he was fighting even for 4 rounds and had wobbled Starling. It was always gonna be a very competitive fight but Harry Carpenter was carrying on early like Lloyd was being lynched in there

He shoulda carried on with that mauling brawling style though I doubt he coulda sustained it for 8 more.
